Shai Gilgeous-Alexander now the clear-cut MVP favorite

Move over, Nikola Jokic. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is now in the driver's seat to clinch his first MVP award.

On Sunday, the Thunder star dropped 33 points in a 105-92 win over the Celtics, extending his team's winning streak to 15. As a result, he became only the fourth guard in NBA history to average over 30 points during such an extended win streak.

The three guards to achieve the feat previously, Michael Jordan, Stephen Curry and James Harden, went on to capture the MVP award. As such, there is a historical precedent for SGA to win the Michael Jordan Trophy a year after he finished second in the voting behind Jokic.

The most impressive aspect of Gilgeous-Alexander has been his sheer dominance on both ends of the floor. During the Thunder's 15-game win streak, he leads all teammates in points (33.1), assists (5.6), steals (2.4), blocks (1.3), minutes (34.5) and plus-minus (14.5). Furthermore, he is draining 2.3 threes per game, a metric that highlights his marked improvement as a long-range shooter. Last year, he averaged 1.5 made threes a game.

As part of their 15-0 streak, the Thunder have taken down powerhouses such as the Mavericks, Rockets, Grizzlies, Knicks and most recently, the Celtics, proving that their 30-5 record is an apt representation of their prowess. And SGA has led all players in fourth-quarter scoring in each of those wins — another key metric that bolsters his MVP case.

One of the factors that worked against SGA's MVP case last year was his subpar performances in marquee games. He averaged 22.0 points in four matchups against Luka Doncic and the Mavericks and had his fair share of troubles against the Celtics, Nuggets and Lakers. However, SGA has shown up and shown out against the elite teams this season, averaging 31.6 points against teams that are above .500.

Unless Jokic's Nuggets (20-14) go on a midseason tear, it's hard to foresee Gilgeous-Alexander not capturing the MVP award this season. The Thunder are on pace for a 65- or 70-win season at their current pace, thanks largely to SGA's brilliance as a two-way guard.
