Suns’ specific plan for Devin Booker’s future revealed

Devin Booker has witnessed everything change around him in Phoenix from teammates and head coaches to even ownership. But from the looks of it, Booker will continue to remain the one constant.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported on Tuesday on the specific plan of the Suns for their four-time All-Star guard Booker’s future. Windhorst says that Phoenix is expected to offer Booker a two-year, $149.8 million extension this offseason (which is the full amount that he is eligible for).

Still in the prime of his career at 28 years old, Booker is already under contract with the Suns for the next three seasons at $171 million in total. Tacking on another two years beyond that would take Booker through his age-33 season, paying him more than $320 million over that span.

There is little doubt that Booker is worth that continued commitment from the Suns. Despite the team’s turmoil this year, he still averaged 25.6 points and 7.1 assists per game. Booker is also a culture-setter as by far Phoenix’s longest-tenured player (since he was drafted by them in 2015) as well as the longtime face of their franchise.

The Suns already made the decision earlier this week to fire head coach Mike Budenholzer, who did not exactly get along with Booker from the looks of it. Previous reports have also suggested that Booker still intends to remain a Sun for life, in spite of Phoenix’s horrible future outlook as a deep second-apron team that has virtually no future assets to work with but was also unable to make even the play-in tournament this season.

While Booker is almost guaranteed to stay put with the Suns, the same cannot be said of his current star teammates. Phoenix will obviously try anything that they can to move Bradley Beal this summer (though he is armed with a full no-trade clause), and the Kevin Durant trade sweepstakes are quickly heating up as well.
