The Rise Of Bronny James - Looking Better Every Game
Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

In the aftermath of a career night for Bronny James, Lakers coach JJ Redick detailed his development as one of the team's youngest active players. According to the coach, James' greatest area of improvement so far is as a playmaker and it's opened up the game in major ways for the 20-year-old point guard.

“The biggest area of improvement is probably just his playmaking, and I don’t mean that just in terms of passing," said Redick, via Lakers Nation. "But just his ability to play on and off the ball as a decision-maker, either a scorer or a passer. And with that, his confidence level and level of aggression have grown. For a young player, those are two really important things.”

Bronny, the 55th pick, has gotten off to a slow start in his NBA career. After becoming a Laker this summer, Bronny made history by playing with his dad on opening night but he's been a rare sight in the Lakers' rotation.

This season, through 22 games, Bronny is averaging 2.3 points, 0.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game on 35.4% shooting. He's played 22 of the team's 69 games so far, averaging 5.8 minutes.

It's on the South Bay Lakers where Bronny has excelled. In nine games so far, James Jr. is averaging 20.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game on 43.1% shooting. JJ Redick says his performance there is the biggest key to his growth as a player.

"I think he’s embraced the G League,” said Redick. “Zach (Guthrie) has done a wonderful job with his development, that staff has done a wonderful job with his development and our crew as well having communication with them and getting updates. When he’s been with us, I think he’s been fantastic. In practices and lately in games, I think he’s been really solid."

As the son of arguably the greatest player ever, Bronny did not come into the league under normal conditions. He faced more pressure than anyone to perform and live up to his iconic family name. While he may not be a superstar like his dad, Bronny is certain that he belongs and he'll have plenty of chances to prove it.

In the Lakers' last contest against the Bucks, James had one of his best games yet with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists on 35.7% shooting. It was a season-high for Bronny that even earned the attention of Stephen A. Smith.

Despite his unimpressive stats, the Lakers have full faith in Bronny and Redick believes that he can be an above-average shooter in the NBA. To meet those expectations, Bronny will have to keep improving as a decision-maker so he can make winning plays on the floor.

While Bronny may not be the strongest, fastest, or most talented young guard, he's got an insane work ethic and a support system in place that should help him maximize his potential in the NBA. What James lacks as a scorer he can make up for with playmaking, defense, and effort every minute he's on the court.

Already, Bronny is showing positive signs and he's handled the entire process like a champ so far. In the face of unprecedented scrutiny, Bronny is embracing the challenge and he's looking better and better with every game.

Bronny James continues progression with career-best in G League

Bronny James continues to grow in confidence. The Lakers rookie dropped a career-high 39 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in the South Bay Lakers' 122-118 win over the Santa Cruz Warriors on Monday night. Bronny shot an impressive 14-of-21 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from three, while logging 38 minutes, also a career-high in any pro game. The back-and-forth game saw the Warriors lead the Lakers by two entering the fourth quarter until Bronny and Co. pulled away late. With his third 30-point game in the G League, Bronny is averaging 22.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 10 starts for South Bay. The 20-year-old is the youngest player in the NBA's developmental league to average at least 20/5/5 this season, per StatMamba. Bronny's G League career-high came less than a week after he dropped an NBA career-high 17 points against the Bucks, albeit in a loss. That performance helped him equal Magic Johnson as the youngest Lakers rookie to log 17 points and five assists at 70 percent shooting. The 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Bronny entered the league with minimal expectations. The son of LeBron James had a subpar collegiate career at USC, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Furthermore, his basketball career was in serious jeopardy when he suffered cardiac arrest during a practice session. Fortunately, he returned from the health episode and cleared the requisite physicals, leading to the Lakers bringing him on board. On Sunday, James Sr. spoke glowingly about his son's gradual improvement as a basketball player since the cardiac arrest. "I've seen he has gotten better from the moment he made his first game back after the [cardiac incident] with USC to the moment the other night when he stepped onto the floor [against the Bucks]," James said of his son. "He has gotten better and better, and I think his confidence has gotten better with the work that he is putting in." With the G League season winding down and the South Bay Lakers (14-17) set to miss the postseason, Bronny is expected to return to the Lakers imminently.

Falcons insider predicts how Kirk Cousins saga will end

The only thing that seems certain regarding the saga involving the Atlanta Falcons and Kirk Cousins is that team owner Arthur Blank is in no hurry to release the quarterback after his money for 2026 became guaranteed on March 17. Falcons insider Josh Kendall of The Athletic shared why he believes Cousins will be traded at some point this offseason. "Here’s the mental math I think Atlanta is using right now," Kendall explained. "Four teams that need a starting quarterback (Titans, Giants, Steelers, Browns) minus three available quarterbacks who are viewed as viable starters for 2025 (Cam Ward, Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson) equals somebody desperate for a quarterback when the draft is complete." It's assumed the Titans will make Ward the first overall pick of the 2025 draft and name him their Week 1 starter. It's reportedly a "safe bet" that the Steelers will sign Rodgers, while Wilson could end up with either the Giants or Browns. Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski was previously Cousins' quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings. NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed on Monday that "Cousins has already signaled to teams that he would likely want to wait to see what happens over draft weekend before accepting a trade" after the Falcons signed the 36-year-old in March 2024 but then made Michael Penix Jr. the eighth overall pick of last year's draft. Cousins lost the Atlanta starting job to Penix this past December. Kendall mentioned that the Falcons are "willing to assume some of Cousins’ 2025 salary" to buy a draft pick from a team such as the Giants or Browns. That said, Kendall thinks Atlanta "should be thrilled" if it gets a fourth-round selection in return for Cousins. The full no-trade clause attached to Cousins' contract could make things interesting if both the Browns and Giants target to-be rookie quarterbacks (Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe) during the first round of the draft on April 24. Atlanta technically could afford to keep Cousins around as Penix's backup, but that could make for an awkward situation as the 24-year-old attempts to establish himself as a starting QB.

Boston Red Sox Make Roster Announcement on Klay Thompson's Brother

The Boston Red Sox are working to trim their roster ahead of Opening Day. In the final days of spring training, the team is making cuts to both veterans and prospects. While no player wants to be cut, some accept their minor league assignments. According to Chris Cotillo, it was announced Sunday that Trayce Thompson, the brother of four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson, will begin the 2025 season with Triple-A Worcester. Thompson signed with Boston just before spring training as a non-roster invite and was seen as a long shot to make the Red Sox roster. However, he had one of the most impressive performances of any player in the league this Spring while he was on the field. The 34-year-old batted .278 with six home runs, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored, and three stolen bases over 36 at-bats in 19 games. It will be fascinating to see what Boston does with Thompson if they happen to deal with injuries early in the season. The reality for Trayce was that the Red Sox had all of their outfield spots taken by other players. Jarren Duran, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela are likely the three starters, and they have different options, potentially including Roman Anthony and Rob Refsnyder. Thompson played in 2023 with the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers, and in limited play (36 games), he hit .163 and struck out 77 times. His Achilles' heel throughout his career has been his high strikeout rate. He has power, and the Red Sox likely know that, but can they trust him to avoid striking out when he's not hitting a home run?

Vikings have seemingly made Aaron Rodgers decision amid recovery of J.J. McCarthy

There previously was some confusion about whether or not the Minnesota Vikings could reach out to quarterback Aaron Rodgers as 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy continues to recover from the full meniscus repair that cost him his rookie season. Rodgers then reportedly spent more than six hours visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of the weekend. On Sunday night, NFL insider Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk indicated that Rodgers no longer expects to hear from the Vikings this spring. "As one source in the general vicinity of those who would be in position to know said Sunday, it’s a 'safe bet' that quarterback Aaron Rodgers eventually will sign with the Steelers," Florio wrote. "...The signs are pointing to Rodgers landing in Pittsburgh for 2025. Could it change? Yes. Again, it’s a 'safe bet' it won’t." Before Rodgers had his meeting with the Steelers, a report mentioned that some within the Vikings "supported the idea of" signing the 41-year-old, in part because those individuals view McCarthy "as a less-than-certain option" for a team that went 14-3 this past season with Sam Darnold as its starter. However, the fact that Minnesota has since been linked with unexciting veterans such as former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill and one-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Joe Flacco suggests that Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell believes McCarthy will look like a legitimate QB1 during springtime workouts. As for Rodgers, the New York Giants seemed to pivot away from the future Hall of Famer when they came to terms on a two-year, $8M contract that could be worth as much as $16M with journeyman Jameis Winston. Numerous stories throughout March hinted that Rodgers preferred to sign with the Steelers over the Giants. That makes sense considering Pittsburgh was a playoff team with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson on the depth chart, while Big Blue ended this past campaign at 3-14. The Steelers reportedly have no deadline for a Rodgers decision, so he theoretically could remain unsigned until he gets a final answer about the Vikings' plans for 2025. With that said, it sounds like O'Connell and Co. want it known that McCarthy will be their undisputed starter when training-camp practices get underway later this summer.
