Warriors benefit from yet another postseason ankle sprain

The Memphis Grizzlies rallied to cut a 20-point deficit to a single point. Then Ja Morant landed on Buddy Hield's foot.

Morant scored on a baseline jumper despite being fouled with four minutes to go in the third quarter. He came down on Hield's foot and immediately dropped to the floor in obvious pain with what appeared to be an ankle sprain.

He didn't leave the court immediately, staying in the game to make the subsequent free throw so he could be eligible to return.

It didn't kill the Grizzlies right away, who rode hot shooting from John Konchar and Desmond Bane to retake the lead. After Bane picked up his fourth foul and Zach Edey committed his fifth, Morant returned with 9:26 to go in the game, and even made his first shot.

But he didn't have the same movement and explosiveness, and had a costly turnover with two minutes to go.

It's reminiscent of the 2017 playoffs, when the San Antonio Spurs were leading the Warriors in Game 1 when Kawhi Leonard injured his ankle landing on Zaza Pachulia's foot. Leonard missed the rest of the series and the Warriors advanced to the NBA Finals.

Now Morant has two days to rehab his ankle before facing the winner of Wednesday's Dallas Mavericks-Sacramento Kings game.

The Warriors will move on to play the Houston Rockets, where Stephen Curry will have at least one extra day to rest his sprained thumb. The joint injuries giveth, and they taketh away for the Warriors.
