Jonathan Kuminga's four-year stint with the Golden State Warriors may be nearing its end.
The forward recently fell out of the Warriors rotation and could be looking for a new team in the offseason, as he is set to hit the market as a free agent.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the 22-year-old forward has drawn some interest from the Brooklyn Nets, who may emerge as a serious contender to land him.
"The Brooklyn Nets have long loomed as a potential suitor that the Warriors have been monitoring given the Nets' projected cap space," Stein wrote. "Brooklyn's true level of interest remains to be seen, but Kuminga could not come to terms with Golden State last fall when he was seeking a contract higher than the $30 million in average annual salary that went to fellow Class of 2021 first-round draftees Jalen Suggs (Orlando) and Jalen Johnson (Atlanta).
"The Nets, at present, are projected to be the only team with $40 million in salary cap space this summer, theoretically positioning them to mount a firm Kuminga pursuit if they wish. That lack of abundant cap space has led various team strategists this week to suggest that a sign-and-trade could be the ultimate mechanism that delivers the former No. 7 pick out of the Bay Area come July."
Despite some flashes of brilliance during December and January, when he played some of the best basketball of his career, the 2024-25 season wasn't Kuminga's strongest. He appeared in 47 games, averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field, a noticeable stepback from his earlier promise.
His season was further impacted by an ankle injury that cost him two months of the season. The Warriors' trade-deadline acquisition of superstar Jimmy Butler further complicates his future with the team. With limited playing time due to Butler's presence and growing uncertainty surrounding his role on Golden State, Kuminga could be looking for a fresh opportunity elsewhere.
The Nets finished 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 26-56 record and are clearly in rebuilding mode. Still, it may present a desirable destination for him as the Nets could offer him the money and playing time he is seeking. Brooklyn has a fairly young roster and features no superstars of the caliber that Golden State does. If Kuminga joins the Nets, he could be a massive building block for their future alongside their top pick in this year's draft. Kuminga could take this opportunity to show he can live up to his first-round billing.
The Warriors, on the other hand, are locked in a first-round playoff series with the Houston Rockets, which is currently tied 1-1. Kuminga still has a chance to make an impact if given the opportunity, but for now, his future with the franchise remains uncertain.
