On January 4, Victor Wembanyama celebrates his 21st birthday. The night before, he played his 100th career NBA game, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Denver Nuggets 113-110.
Most people spend their 21st out on the town, often forgetting what happened that night, but Wembanyama is clocking into work as the Spurs host Denver and try to take a 2-0 season series lead against the three-time MVP.
What does Wemby want for his birthday? He was pretty straightforward.
"Trying to get a win, that's my birthday gift," he told reporters after last night's win.
Through 100 games, Wembanyama has averaged 22.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.7 blocks and 1.2 steals. He is the youngest player since Shaquille O'Neal to average 20 and 10 at his age and is only bested by David Robinson through the first 100 games of his career.
Between Robinson, Tim Duncan, and Wembanyama, one can easily argue that the Spurs boast the best three big men of any team in the NBA.
Wembanyama, since entering the NBA, has made it clear that he wants to avoid any and all off-court distractions, so the likelihood of him painting the town red after the game seems low, although a caravan of Mitch Johnson, Wemby, Chris Paul, Sandro Mamukelashvili, Jeremy Sochan, and the rest bar hopping around the River Walk is fun to imagine.
Before any festivities, the Spurs have to defend their home court against the Nuggets, who will be looking for revenge after losing a nail-biter last night. The Spurs are three-point underdogs in the game but entered Friday's matchup as 6.5-point dogs.
As Wembanyama throws his hat in the MVP race, another statement win over Nikola Jokic would be the best gift he could ask for.
