Chase Center is as active as the Golden State Warriors were at the 2024 NBA trade deadline. A week after the Warriors' arena hosted the NBA All-Star weekend, it will throw a two-for-one as fans watch in joy. The Warriors will retire the 2015 NBA Finals MVP's jersey on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Warriors will host the Dallas Mavericks in a rematch of their Feb. 12 matchup, which the latter team won 111-107.
However, for as important as getting revenge on the short-handed Mavericks is to the Warriors, celebrating the accomplishments of a focal piece to their dynastic puzzle weighs heavier on the franchise and its fans.
In a roller-coaster season that featured a hot start, a significant dip, and trading for Jimmy Butler, taking a moment to appreciate the championship past would be a much-needed palate cleanser for the 2024-25 campaign.
Stephen Curry won his lone NBA Finals MVP in 2022, as the Warriors won 4-2 against the Boston Celtics. While you'd expect more for the only unanimous NBA MVP, there are two players responsible for Curry having fewer individual accolades: Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala.
Iguodala averaged 16.3, 5.8 rebounds, and four assists per game during the 2014-15 NBA Finals, in which the Warriors beat the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers 4-2.
Although many believe Curry should have won the Finals MVP award, Iguodala ultimately hoisted the trophy, igniting a dynastic run for the Warriors.
Regardless of the public's opinion on who deserves what piece of hardware, Curry believes the Warriors wouldn't have won four NBA championships without Iguodala.
“I speak for both of us [Draymond Green and himself] when we talk about the honor," Curry told RG. "It’s going to be fantastic for the entire organization to welcome my brother back. He helped us win a lot of championships... His IQ, his impact on the game... We obviously don't win those without him."
After eight seasons with the franchise, the Warriors will retire Iguodala's No. 9 jersey. Although Curry is the straw that stirs the drink, during his time with the Warriors, Iguodala was the ice that held the team together against opponents such as James.
