Why Is Stephen Curry Still Playing?

Stephen Curry could retire right now and widely be considered one of the top ten players of all time. He has won four titles, led the league in scoring twice, been the NBA MVP twice, and is a ten-time All-Star and All-NBA player. He has spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors, which puts him in the same conversations as Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Dirk Nowitzki.

This summer, he added an Olympic gold medal to his trophy case, but he is far from being done, despite being 36 years old. He is the greatest shooter to ever play basketball and will leave a lasting legacy, but he isn't thinking about that yet.

After the Warriors' recent 102-99 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, Curry joked around with reporters, telling them that "I am a normal human being and very approachable."

Of course, that is simply not true. On Wednesday, Curry explained on NBC's Dubs Talk why he is still playing. Monte Poole asked what a fifth ring would mean to Curry, and the superstar didn't hesitate.

"Honestly, it's the only thing I'm really playing for at this point," he said. "It's the only thing that matters in the sense of accomplishments. I still love to play the game, I still love to come to work every day, basketball is still fun for me."

Curry said that he wants to be "greedy" with five titles to his name. So far, the 2024-25 Warriors are off to an excellent start. At 10-3, they are the best team in the Western Conference and have statement wins over the Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks. For the first time since the 2022 run, the Warriors look like very real threats to win a championship.
