49ers announce roster moves ahead of battle with Packers
David Gonzales-Imagn Images

The San Francisco 49ers have announced the following roster moves ahead of Sunday's game in Green Bay against the Packers:

  • Placed LB Tatum Bethune (knee) on IR (injured reserve)
  • Promoted S Tashaun Gipson to the active roster
  • Elevated LB Jalen Graham from the practice squad (standard elevation)
  • Elevated CB Nick McCloud from the practice squad (standard elevation)

Bethune injured his knee last week against Seattle. In nine games this season, he has one fumble recovery and one tackle. The rookie out of Florida State has primarily played on special teams.

Gipson, a 13-year veteran, was a key part of San Francisco's defense in 2022 and 2023. He was elevated to the active roster the previous two weeks, making Sunday his third game in a row to be active. Gipson has 33 career interceptions, 68 passes defended, and 684 total tackles. He was a Pro Bowler in 2014 while with the Cleveland Browns.

Graham is in his second season with the 49ers. In August, the team waived Graham, who then signed to the Washington Commanders practice squad. In October, the 49ers claimed Graham from the Commanders' practice squad. San Francisco waived Graham again in early November but re-signed him to their practice squad.

McCloud is in his fourth season and started five games for the New York Giants this season. The 49ers signed him to their practice squad on November 11th after he was released by New York. In the five games he started for the Giants, McCloud defended one pass and had 14 tackles. He is primarily a special teams player for the 49ers.

Per Matt Barrows, of The Athletic, "Graham's and McCloud's elevation means no elevation for rookie QB Tanner Mordecai. Which means no emergency third QB for tomorrow's game."

The 49ers also downgraded OL Jon Feliciano from questionable to out.

Seahawks HC Provides Insight on Titans Free Agent Signing

One of the most underrated signings that new Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi made this offseason was the addition of veteran defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones. He came to Tennessee from the Seattle Seahawks, where he spent the last two seasons, and on Tuesday, Seahawks head coach Mike MacDonald spoke to the media and talked about what a great addition Jones was for the Titans. "He's a really talented player, man," said MacDonald. "He's such a heavy player around the edge and can also rush inside. ... He'll give you front flexibility being able to pass rush both inside and out, so he's kind of a great guy to move around." Tennessee released star edge rusher Harold Landry III earlier this offseason, so the team needed to fill the void that he left in the defense. There are several viable options set to be available in the NFL Draft, but adding a versatile and proven player is always a smart move. Jones is a six-year NFL veteran who played the first four years of his career with the Denver Broncos after being drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has 30.5 career sacks and 40 tackles for loss, as well as an interception, three forced fumbles and seven passes batted down. He'll be an excellent addition to an already-strong defensive line in Tennessee.

New Celtics ownership to replace 'Lucky' mascot with androgynous dancing 'Shamrock'

When you spend over $6 billion I suppose you want to add your own personal footprint to your acquisition, but the guess here is not all Boston Celtics fans will be thrilled to hear what the team's new owner's first major change is. In an attempt to be more inclusive to Celtics Nation Bill Chisholm today annonced that they will be retiring Lucky the Leprechaun at the end of the regular season and debuting their new mascot "Shamrock" in Game 1 of their first round playoff series. After seeing the blowback that the Dallas Mavericks' new owners received after trading their 25 year old superstar Luka Doncic, Chisholm decided to hire a public relations consulting firm to first vet the five finalists for the team's new mascot and the dancing Shamrock proved to be the most popular. By choosing an androgynous mascot, the Celtics are following in the footsteps of the head of the aforementioned PR firm's alma mater the University of Delaware. "YoUDee," a fighting blue hen is the school's mascot and was intentionally designed to be neither explicitly male nor female in an effort to promote inclusivity and challenge traditional gender roles. The Celtics new ownership group reportedly deemed Lucky the Leprechaun to be "problematic" in the modern world and Chisholm compared the dancing Shamrock change to when Robert Kraft changed the New England Patriots logo: The Dancing Shamrock can be our Elvis! Our friends in Foxborough won six Super Bowls after they made the change. Maybe Shamrock can help Tatum and JB dance their way all the way up to Banner 24." We are quite sad here at Celtics Life to hear that Lucky is getting a pink slip after all these years, but if you want to learn more about how this mascot change came to be, we'd suggest checking your calendar.

Pittsburgh Pirates Shockingly Option Two-Time All-Star to Triple-A

The Pittsburgh Pirates have made the shocking decision to option longtime closer David Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Per the team on social media: We have selected the contract of RHP Thomas Harrington to the 26-man Major League roster. C Jason Delay has been designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster, and RHP David Bednar has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the 26-man active roster. Bednar, 30, has struggled in the early going, which follows his struggles from 2024. Last season, he went 3-8 with a 5.77 ERA. He had 23 saves, but was demoted from the role at the end of the year. He produced a -0.9 WAR, per baseball reference. This season, he's already 0-2 with a 27.00 ERA in three appearances. He's given up three earned runs in just 1.0 official inning of work. It's a sudden downturn for Bednar, who was one of the best closers in the league for years. An All-Star in 2022 and 2023, he led the National League in saves (39) back in 2023. Now, he'll go to Triple-A to try to figure things out again and regain his form. Bednar is under contract through the 2026 season. The Pirates will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:05 p.m. ET. Harrington will pitch against Shane Baz. As for the Indians, they'll also be in action on Tuesday. It will be the home opener for the team as they host the Iowa Cubs at 6:35 p.m. ET.

NFL insider says Steelers QB candidate Aaron Rodgers is starting to 'agitate' people around the league with his recent actions

The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't the only ones waiting on Aaron Rodgers. In fact, the entire league is still in limbo as they await Rodgers to make his decision. And frankly, they're starting to get tired of it... NFL starting to get 'agitated' with Rodgers holdup "I assume the Steelers would like a decision sooner rather than later. Not I assume, I know several members of the organization have said so," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said on The Insiders. "It has been fascinating. You walk around these league meetings, talk to other general managers and coaches. How many different people have said, 'Hey, when's Rodgers going to make his decision?' It does seem like it has agitated everyone." The truth is, the Steelers are getting a little tired of the Rodgers saga themselves. Owner Art Rooney said as much at the annual meetings, stating that he would wait out Rodgers' decision, but not much longer... "Not forever, but a little while longer," said Rooney when asked if he's ok with waiting on Rodgers to make a decision. "We keep hearing that he's, I guess, headed in our direction, and so that seems to be all signs are positive so far. Didn't envision it taking this long." The Steelers must have some certification in hand from Rodgers. You can portray all the confidence you want about Mason Rudolph via quotes, but with the core of the team on what could be their last run, you're not tying Super Bowl aspirations to a player who has played a backup role for the majority of his career. "The Pittsburgh Steelers do remain optimistic. Based on everything I’m hearing, they are willing to wait this out," said ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "And a lot of people I’ve talked to in the quarterback market, some sources close to Jameis Winston’s process, Russell Wilson, etc. They believe that Rodgers must have some sort of assurance from the Steelers, or vice versa, that they could end up together." So everything is set. Rodgers has visited with them, his preferred options are off the table, and now, he's even throwing passes to Steelers stars. When he joins is the only question that remains.
