49ers begin offseason program today
Robert Kupbens-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are among eight NFL teams kicking off Phase One of their offseason program today, just two days before the 2025 NFL Draft. This initial two-week phase won't include any on-field practices, as it's limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation.

The biggest question heading into the week was whether quarterback Brock Purdy would report to the team, given that contract negotiations are still ongoing. On Monday, Mike Silver of The Athletic reported that progress has been made toward a multi-year extension, with Purdy potentially closing in on a deal that could exceed $50 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.

Silver also noted that whether or not Purdy reports could signal how close the two sides are to finalizing an agreement. He added that no significant progress has been made on a contract extension for George Kittle, and the tight end might not report for Phase One.

Phase Two of the offseason program begins in about two weeks and spans three weeks. It includes on-field workouts such as individual and group drills, "perfect play" drills, and walk-throughs where offensive players line up against other offensive players and defensive players line up against fellow defenders. No live contact or team drills are permitted during this phase.

Phase Three consists of the final four weeks and allows teams to conduct up to 10 days of organized team activities (OTAs). While live contact remains prohibited, 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

It's worth noting that the entire offseason program, aside from the mandatory minicamp in June, is voluntary. That minicamp will mark the conclusion of the offseason program, and the team will break until training camp begins in late July.

Additionally, the team will host a rookie minicamp on one of the weekends following the 2025 NFL Draft.

49ers offseason program schedule:

  • First day: April 22
  • OTA offseason workouts: May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3, June 5
  • Mandatory minicamp: June 10-11
