San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has said Brock Purdy is a top-10 quarterback and he deserves to be paid like one. Accordingly, the 49ers have been working on securing more salary cap space so they can afford to give their franchise quarterback a suitable contract extension this offseason.
Unfortunately, they have had to jettison some players to get deeper under the cap. For example, the 49ers sent Deebo Samuel packing and traded him to the Washington Commanders.
That has weakened the 49ers offense to some extent, especially with Brandon Aiyuk still rehabilitating from a season-ending injury.
And now there is speculation not only that the Niners have botched contract talks with Purdy - who seemingly wants more than $50 million APY in a new deal - but also that maybe they should wash their hands of the whole project and trade their QB.
"Trade Brock Purdy to the Titans for their second round pick and draft a quarterback @49ers," team insider Grant Cohn posted on social media.
That position is a head-turner ... but it sounds like that of nothing more than a provocateur. ... unless one really doesn't value what's been accomplished here by Purdy.
A quarterback is only as good as the weapons he has around him. And when Purdy has been properly equipped? He's been superior.
His 2023 work? They have a Super Bowl to show for it.
A 2025 solution? Are Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams healthy?
If so, Purdy can again reach the heights.
Can a QB drafted in the second round do all of that? It's a wobbly bet, to be sure.
