49ers face front office shakeup to start 2024
USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers have hung on to assistant general manager Adam Peters despite concerted interest in his services for rival teams over recent years.

However, it now looks as if the 49ers may finally lose general manager John Lynch's right-hand man.

Peters, is expected to be a finalist for the Washington Commanders' vacant president of football operations role.

His departure would leave the 49ers with a huge hole to fill in their personnel department, with Peters having had a massive hand in constructing the most star-studded roster in the NFL.

If he does depart for a chance to be the head man with the Commanders, then The Athletic's Matt Barrows floated two possible replacements.

Current Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew was hired from San Francisco and will reportedly be "evaluated" by the new president of football operations. Barrows suggested Mayhew could be hired back by Lynch if he is let go by Washington.

In addition, Barrows pointed to Tom Telesco, recently fired as general manager of the Los Angeles Chargers, as a potential candidate to enter the 49ers' front office on account of a strong relationship with Lynch.

Between interest in both their coaching staff and their executives, the 49ers continually dealt with the hazards of consistent success year on year.

The relationships Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have around the league and the successful promotions of people already inside the building have allowed the Niners to survive departures of highly valued members of staff, but replacing Peters would be arguably their toughest challenge yet in that regard.
