San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shared an update Friday regarding Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey is eligible to come off of injured reserve, but Shanahan told the media that the team will not open the three-week window for him to be activated to the roster.

Not only will the practice window not be opened for McCaffrey, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter says McCaffrey is not expected to play in the 49ers’ Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Oct. 20.

The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve in Week 2 due to his Achilles/calf injuries.

San Francisco could try to bring McCaffrey back for Week 8 on Oct. 27, or they could keep him out their next two games and wait until after their Week 9 bye before having him return on Nov. 10 in Week 10.

Jordan Mason has done well as San Francisco’s lead back in place of McCaffrey, but he left Thursday’s game with a shoulder injury.
