The Detroit Lions, in spite of their current NFC-best record of 14-2, have been as afflicted with injuries as any team in the NFL.
However, even they couldn't find a role for former rumored-almost-Dallas Cowboys and acclaimed All-Pro New York Jets safety Jamal Adams.
On Wednesday, the Lions cut Adams off of their practice squad. Adams had played in two games for the Lions, both starts, after a three-game (and one start) stint with the Tennessee Titans earlier this year.
The three-time Pro Bowler and one time All-Pro safety is only 29 years old, but his NFL future looks bleak after being released twice this year.
Adams was previously the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Jets. He had a promising start to his career, making the Pro Bowl in his second and third seasons with the Jets. However, as his relationship with the organization soured, he continually took to the media and social media to voice his displeasures.
He compared his importance to the Jets to that of Tom Brady for the Patriots and Aaron Donald of the Rams, following a 2019 trade deadline that swirled with rumors.
"The Rams don't take calls on Aaron Donald ... the Patriots don't take calls on Tom Brady. That's where I hold myself," Adams told reporters at the time.
Adams threatened to skip the entire offseason program without a contract extension the next year, going to Instagram calling the Jets "A lot of talk no action" in regards to his extension request. He then went on to formally request a trade from the organization.
There was flirtations with the Dallas Cowboys at that time - in part driven by the fact that he is a DFW native who played at Hebron High School.
Adams would be traded to the Seattle Seahawks in 2020, after making one Pro Bowl appearance with them, his career took a nosedive. After struggling to stay healthy and serving often as a locker-room distraction otherwise, Adams was released by the Seahawks in April.
Adams had his moments of dominance with the Jets, with the Seahawks, and ... well, who knows how he might've done as an almost-Cowboy.
But if the Lions have a practice-squadder who is more equipped than he is to help them to a Super Bowl? That may very mark the end of a notable run.
