Bears Reportedly Looking to Add Quarterback

While there has been much speculation about who the Bears should target during the draft and free agency, the quarterback position has been the least discussed. The Bears are doing everything they can to ensure that Caleb Williams takes the second-year leap and is the starting quarterback for years to come. However, one aspect that the team seems focused on is the depth behind Williams.

Tyson Bagent is a quality backup but has only had four career starts. Typically, the role of a backup quarterback can be divided into two buckets: challenging the incumbent for the starting spot, or providing veteran leadership in the quarterback room and being able to start in a pinch.

We know that Bagent won't be challenging Williams for the starting job, so it's fair to wonder if new Head Coach Ben Johnson is looking for someone who can provide more veteran leadership to Williams. We know that Bagent can start and keep the ship afloat if needed (we saw this during his time with Justin Fields), but with Bagent heading into the final year of his contract, does it make sense to teach a brand new offense to a young quarterback who may opt to sign elsewhere next year, where he can be given a chance to start?

It might make more sense to bring in a veteran with ties to Johnson's offense already— someone who can help Williams on the sidelines and in the film room.  The most obvious answer is Teddy Bridgewater, who signed as a backup with the Detroit Lions last year.  Other veteran options that are still available are Joe Flacco and Case Keenum.
