Former Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold is clearly a talented player. You don’t get picked in the first round of the NFL Draft and earn All-American honors in college without being extremely skilled.
With that said, Arnold is not a finished product after being selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.
Former Patriots coach Bill Belichick joined Pat McAfee for the first round of the Draft and shared where Terrion Arnold must improve moving forward.
“Terrion was one of the two good corners down there. Kool-Aid [McKinstry] was the other one,” Bill Belichick said. “Terrion’s a tough kid. He’s a good tackler. He’s obviously been well-coached by coach [Nick] Saban. But there’s some plays where he kind of loses concentration.”
Terrion Arnold recorded five interceptions and had 17 passes defended in 2023 as he was statistically one of the best defensive backs in the SEC.
However, Belichick didn’t see the consistency on film that he was hoping to.
“There’s too much separation on this route and that happens to him a number of times,” Belichick said. “He’s got talent, just at times, he loses focus, gets out of position, then misses a tackle. I think this is just a consistency thing.”
Arnold was ranked as a four-star recruit and the No. 35 overall player in the country in the class of 2021, according to the On3 Industry rankings.
He excelled in high school and in each of the past two seasons at Alabama. In addition to earning All-American honors for his play in 2023, he was named a Freshman All-American in 2022.
Bill Belichick expects Terrion Arnold to continue to be productive in the NFL, but he does see some areas where Arnold needs to improve.
“There’s enough talent there. He’s a good kid; he’s a good teammate. I think he’ll fit in well in coach [Dan] Campbell and coach [Aaron] Glenn’s culture,” Belichick said. “Just really needs to work on more consistency with his fundamentals. Good talent, good guy to work with. Will develop under coach Glenn’s coaching.”
Barry Sanders gives his stance on Terrion Arnold to Detroit Lions in NFL Draft
With the NFL Draft right in its backyard, Detroit lined up its first selection and got ready to make the pick on Thursday night. Sure enough, the guy they wanted was still available, so the Lions snatched up Alabama defensive back Terrion Arnold with the No. 24 overall pick.
It was a pick meant to shore up the defense in a league where quarterback play figures to steadily improve.
Lions legend Barry Sanders weighed in on the pick after it was made.
“I mean, you look at all these dynamic young quarterbacks coming into our division, we’ve got to have somebody to neutralize that out on the corner,” Sanders said on the set of the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday night. “I think also, you just look at our defense, bringing in a personality that can really mix well with the guys that are there, that have had success. We were just a few steps away from a Super Bowl last year.
“So bringing in a guy who’s a proven winner, great program, who you know is a player and you figure can really fit into that scheme and those personalities in the locker room.”

Steelers lose their third free agent of the week to same team following departure of once-promising trade acquisition
The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Mike Williams from the New York Jets at the 2024 trade deadline. Jackson will be a bit of an acquired taste in Los Angeles and for HC Jim Harbaugh. After receiving him in a trade that sent Diontae Jackson packing, many were skeptical of trading for an often-injured corner who is smaller and slighter than what the Steelers normally covet. Najee Harris averaged less than four yards per carry during his time with the Steelers, and he never had that second gear that Pittsburgh saw at Alabama. However, Harris also never played with a good offensive line and was asked to be the bell cow for an offense that changed running schemes multiple times. And still, he reached over 1,000 yards and five-plus rushing TDs every year in Pittsburgh, all the while not missing a start, much less a game. Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh has a type at RB, and Najee Harris fits that type. A road grader with a ton of durability and power, he’s exactly what the Chargers want their lead back to look like. So it’s a move that brings Najee Harris back to his home state of California and brings the Los Angeles Chargers closer to being the offense they want to be: A smashmouth team that throws off play action. As for Mike Williams, the familiarity with the Chargers and the fact that the team still has a need at the WR position made this move easy to see coming.
New York Yankees Get Excellent News Out of Gerrit Cole's Elbow Surgery
The New York Yankees got devastating news this week when it was revealed that ace Gerrit Cole would miss the entire season because of an elbow injury. However, if you're looking silver linings, the Yankees got great news out of the surgery, Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com: Gerrit Cole’s UCL surgery included internal bracing, according to the Yankees, which can reduce inflammation and speed recovery time. Generally speaking, this could mean he is closer to a 12-month recovery than if he had the procedure with the traditional method. Given when the injury occurred, there is even a slight chance that Cole could be ready for Opening Day in 2026. For example, Spencer Strider had Tommy John surgery early in the 2024 season and is set to come back by late April of this year. Lucas Giolito of the Red Sox had internal bracing done last spring training and was on track for an Opening Day return this year until he injured his hamstring. The 34-year-old Cole is one of the best pitchers of his era, having gone 153-80 over a 12-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros and Yankees. A six-time All-Star, Cole won the American League Cy Young Award in 2023 and has won two ERA titles. He dealt with elbow issues last season but returned to go 8-5 in 17 starts as the Yankees won the American League pennant. He pitched just 95 innings for the season, striking out 99. The Yankees will open up the season on March 27 at home against the Milwaukee Brewers.
Oilers' Jake Walman expresses hard feelings toward former team over trade
The Oilers made an impressive off-the-radar move to acquire Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks, who opened up about feeling shocked by the trade and his history of being dealt. Jake Walman was traded to the Edmonton Oilers by the San Jose Sharks on Friday for a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft and forward prospect Carl Berglund. Jake Walman expresses hard feelings about trade from a Detroit Red Wings, shock about joining Oilers So far, things have gone swimmingly for Walman, making his impact felt in his first game donning the orange and blue. However, Walman's journey to northern Alberta hasn't been an easy one. In a new interview, Walman describes his journey so far, sharing the difficult emotions he experienced after getting traded. "I was a little bit shocked that they just threw me away. That's how I felt. I was upset. I wanted to prove people wrong, at that point, the following year. I thought we were building something in Detroit, and I was going to be a part of it." Clearly, Walman is referring to his trade from the Detroit Red Wings, but it's likely that some of those same emotions resurfaced when he learned he was being traded once more. However, being traded to Connor McDavid's definitely team softens the blow. Some rumours have previously surfaced that the Red Wings moved on from Walman because of locker room concerns, but they're not reliable and Walman seems like a great personable add to the team. Furthermore, Walman reflects on his opportunity to play on a Stanley Cup-contending team, expressing his gratitude towards GM Stan Bowman. "It says a little bit about the transition I've made in a year, and getting the trust from Stan to come and get me. "It means a lot. I feel shocked, but obviously really excited for this opportunity. It's a different feeling. You know what (kind of) team you're joining." Hopefully, fans will be able to see Walman's "Griddy" once he settles in a bit more in Oil Country.
Winners, losers from Thursday's NFL free agency: Steelers get a QB
The NFL offseason is officially under way with the beginning of the new league year this week. Let's take a look at some of the biggest winners and losers from Thursday's movement and deals. Winner: Mason Rudolph, quarterback, Pittsburgh Steelers It is not the quarterback anybody was expecting or waiting for, but the Pittsburgh Steelers finally do, in fact, have signed a quarterback this offseason. They brought back Mason Rudolph, who already has an extensive history with the team on a two-year contract. It is a nice win for Rudolph because depending on what happens with the quarterback carousel in free agency he might actually have an opportunity to start and throw deep passes to DK Metcalf and George Pickens. If the Steelers bring in Aaron Rodgers, he still might get a chance to play later in the season if a 41-year-old Rodgers does not play in 17 games. Or play effectively. Either way, it is a very good spot for Rudolph. Loser: C.J. Stroud, quarterback, Houston Texans Good news for Stroud: the Texans have made some dramatic changes to their offensive line this offseason, hoping to address what was a massive issue and weakness during the 2024 season. Bad news for Stroud: they may have actually made the offensive line worse than it already was. Add in the trade of left tackle Laremy Tunsil and there are certainly some big questions remaining on the Texans offensive line. Winner: Jack Conklin, OT, Cleveland Browns The Browns re-worked the contract of the veteran tackle, giving him the opportunity to earn $12M this season after incentives, while also allowing him to hit free agency in 2026 instead of 2027. The win there for Conklin is that he gets his money this season, an opportunity to prove himself to be healthy over a full season, while also hitting free agency a year earlier when he can potentially get one more big payday in his career. Loser: Everybody waiting on Aaron Rodgers There are no winners here if you are in a position waiting for a 41-year-old quarterback, that might not be any good anymore, to make up his mind on where he is going to play this season. The Steelers, New York Giants and perhaps the Minnesota Vikings are all in a holding pattern waiting on how to move forward with their offseasons. Russell Wilson, presumably a backup option for the team that does not get Rodgers, is in a holding pattern waiting to see who might still want his services. The winner of this sweepstakes gets to pay big money to a quarterback that might be a bigger distraction than he is worth on the field. Everybody else gets to decide between Wilson, Jameis Winston and Joe Flacco. Winner: Gardner Minshew, quarterback, Kansas City Chiefs After spending the past two seasons in Indianapolis and Jacksonville, Minshew now gets an opportunity to be the backup for Patrick Mahomes after reportedly agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Minshew was pretty much always going to be a backup this season no matter where he went in free agency, but at least now he gets a chance to do so on a Super Bowl contender while still getting guaranteed money from the Raiders. Good deal all around for him.
