Things quickly went from bad to worse for the Cleveland Browns and Deshaun Watson after the former Pro Bowl QB re-ruptured his Achilles following even more sexual misconduct allegations.
Back in 2022, the Browns traded for Watson and signed him to a then-record-breaking contract: five years, $230 million fully-guaranteed.
All he did after that was play some of the worst football of his career and suffer debilitating injuries while navigating additional accusations concerning his troublesome off-field behavior.
Now three years removed from taking a chance on Watson, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has owned up to his franchise's mistake.
"We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun. We thought we had the quarterback, we didn't and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we've got to dig ourselves out of that hole," Haslam said. "… [the trade] was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee and I, so hold us accountable."
Cleveland has no choice but to wear this one, especially knowing what we already knew about the circumstances that led to his unceremonious exit from Houston.
Teams don't just let go of multiple-time Pro Bowl quarterbacks for no reason. There's usually something serious going on behind-the-scenes (or in this case out in the open) that forces them to move on.
You'd love to say you feel bad for the Browns but it's pretty hard when they make decisions like these. Still though, fans in Cleveland deserve a lot better than what this organization has given them since the Jim Brown era.
And we'll see if that ever happens for a team that's made the playoffs just four times since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
