The Cleveland Browns have a big decision to make with their first-round selection. The Browns generally do not have a good history with striking oil on players they draft in the early rounds.
With the No. 2 overall pick, the Browns need someone to pair with Myles Garrett and be the face of the franchise. This needs to be an immediate plug and play type of player who can lead by example on the first day.
This is a make it or break it pick for general manager Andrew Berry and his staff. It can be said this is the most important pick in the history of the rebirth of the franchise.
The front office has not given up who they are considering with the pick.
However, Adam Schefter believes he has enough intelligence on the matter to make the call for the Browns. Schefter, of ESPN, thinks the Browns are going to rush up to the podium and had the commissioner a card with Abdul Carter's name on it.
“The way this is shaking out to me, it looks like he’s tracking to be a [Cleveland] Brown,” Schefter said via ESPN Cleveland.
Much can happen between now and the draft, especially with Carter's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, dropping a bombshell on Thursday that the former Penn State star would not be working out at his school's Pro Day due to lingering injuries. He also did not participate in the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine for the same reasons.
If healthy, Carter could form a strong defensive front alongside All-Pro Myles Garrett.
The Browns also need a quarterback as they do not have one that is capable of becoming the franchise player they need at the position. However, the No. 2 pick is too rich to spend on any quarterback not named Cam Ward.
Cleveland can find a suitable quarterback of the future with their No. 33 pick or thereafter as there are about four quarterbacks capable of leading the Browns next season. People might be clamoring for Shedeur Sanders in Cleveland, but he is not worth the second pick.
