Bucky Irving enters his second season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025, the second year of his four-year rookie contract worth $4.79 million. After playing one season for the University of Minnesota and two seasons for the University of Oregon, he entered the NFL Draft, where the Rams drafted him in the fourth round in the 2024 draft. In his only season in the league thus far, he amassed 1,122 rushing yards with eight touchdowns, along with 392 yards and no touchdowns receiving.

Last season, Bucky Irving was a top 15 running back in all formats, despite not starting the season as the lead back. Irving became a reliable and electric running back partway through the season for the Bucs. This should continue while he remains a member of the Buccaneers, establishing himself as an electric playmaker with an ability to gain yards receiving as well, which adds to his value, especially in PPR leagues.

With an entire season to play as the RB1 for Tampa Bay, what is the potential for Bucky Irving?

Bucky Irving 2024 Stats and Fantasy Production

Bucky Irving played in 17 games last season with the Buccaneers, although he only started three. Irving rushed 207 times for 1,122 yards while recording eight touchdowns. He also hauled in 47 of his 52 passing targets, collecting another 392 yards and no additional touchdowns. He also accumulated no passing yards. He was used as a returner six times, but did not accumulate any fantasy stats when doing so.

In 2024, Bucky Irving was a solid RB2 or RB3 for most fantasy teams, once he was given a larger role in the offense. Using Fantasy Pros standard scoring, Williams was worth 11.6 points per game for a total of 197.4 points cumulatively. In PPR leagues, those numbers bumped up to 14.4 points per game for a total of 244.4 points cumulatively.

He managed to stay fully healthy for the season and was finally given the priority back role for the Bucs by the end of the season. Rachaad White started as the lead back for the Buccaneers offense, and continued to see many touches, but due to the explosive nature of Irving’s gameplay, Irving earned the opportunity to take over the role.

Bucky Irving enters 2025 healthy and motivated for a big season. Given his first opportunity to start the season as the RB1 in Tampa, Irving will look to show teams he is a true top-end RB talent. While he ultimately earned the lead back role, Rachaad White stayed a stat handcuff by getting a few opportunities. That is likely to change this year, as Irving will likely be given a full chance to prove himself with the higher explosiveness and upside.

According to Fantasy Pros, Bucky Irving is projected as the 19th overall pick in standard leagues, 9th among running backs. In PPR leagues, he slips to 21st overall, but up to 7th among running backs. Half PPR leagues put him at his best, at 16th overall, 7th among running backs.

Entering 2025, I expect Irving to have a massive year. He is an explosive player on an exciting, playmaking offense in Tampa. They have goals not only to win a mediocre division but also to make a deep playoff run, and Irving gives them the best opportunity to do so.

Bucky Irving should be able to gather 1800-1900 total yards from scrimmage (rush and pass) in a full season as RB1, 70-80 receptions, and 12-14 touchdowns. He may get slightly handcuffed with touchdowns at the goal line. He is projected to get drafted in the early or mid-second round, depending on formats. For the 2025 season, this is a risky placement for an unproven track record, but his potential and opportunity could make him a big asset for teams taking the risk. The key will be whether he stays healthy and maintains a full starter workload for the first time in his brief career.

Bucky Irving will be entering his age-23 season this year, which means he should have many good years still left in his prime. He does not have much of an injury history, and his youth sets him up to be a factor for several seasons in a row. He remains an easy Top 10 RB in all scoring leagues for the long term, if he can prove that his rookie year was not a fluke, and avoids a sophomore slump.

The only real question mark for Irving, right now, is his role. He remains under contract with the Buccaneers for several more seasons, so as long as they commit to him as their full-time RB1, he should put up great stats. However, if the team chooses to go with a running back by committee or split carry approach, it could hurt Irving’s overall production. If the end of last season is an indication, he should be the feature of the offense, but plans can always change.

The other concern is his position. The truth is, a lot of running backs fade earlier than their counterparts at WR and QB. There are many stories of running backs fading at or before their 30s. Bucky Irving is young and should provide value for a while, but there have been times in the past when RBs disappear out of nowhere. Either way, it is hard to invest in a running back in fantasy sports because their shelf life is short and unpredictable.

Bucky Irving is a great option to hold on to if he is already on your team in your league. He will score points and slot in as a decent RB1 or a high-quality RB2 out of the gate, with potential for even more.

Owners who are willing to take risks and pay the likely high asking price to acquire him may be rewarded for the move, as he could easily become one of the Top RBs in the league if all falls right. The risk is high, though, given the associated cost.

Final Thoughts

Entering his age-23 season, Bucky Irving has a clear opportunity to establish himself as one of the best RBs in the. game. The Buccaneers’ plans for his full-time role are not entirely clear, although it appears to be decided, so his dynasty prospects are slightly unclear.

For 2025, he is worth drafting and relying on as a top-end RB option, but there is some risk there. Irving had a great rookie season last year, and assuming he again stays healthy, that pattern should continue. The Bucs should once again be in contention, with enough weapons on offense to keep the defense honest, opening opportunities. They score often, and Irving should be a big part of that. Keep an eye on his role, but Irving should be a clear Top 10 RB with his potential, in all formats.
