The New Orleans Saints and every other NFL team will meet with a ton of draft prospects during the NFL Scouting Combine through this weekend.
Therefore, it's pure hyperbole to make big news out of too many of these meetings. However, it does become newsworthy when a top quarterback prospect meets with any team.
On Thursday, Nick Underhill of neworleans.football was the first to report that the Saints were meeting with University of Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward. Most scouts and analysts predict that Ward will be the first quarterback drafted, with a strong possibility of being the first overall selection.
New Orleans currently owns the ninth overall choice in the first round after a 5-12 finish last season. It would probably take a significant trade up for the Saints to get either Ward or Colorado Buffalos QB Shadeur Sanders, also projected to be a high pick.
This seems unlikely to happen, as the Saints have a ton of needs on both sides of the ball and need to fill most of them through the draft. New Orleans has also indicated that they'll stick with veteran quarterback Derek Carr this season.
Although getting into position to draft either Cam Ward or Shadeur Sanders seems farfetched, meetings with the prospects are still newsworthy. Especially with new head coach Kellen Moore on board. Moore, a quarterback himself, has been a successful offensive coordinator for seven seasons and is getting his first head coaching opportunity.
Cam Ward spent his first two collegiate seasons at Washington State. Over that time with the Cougars, Ward completed 65.5% of his throws for 6,968 yards with 48 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He also added 13 rushing scores.
Ward transferred to Miami last offseason. His 39 touchdown passes led the NCAA as he completed 67.2% of his throws for 4,313 yards and only seven interceptions with an additional four rushing touchdowns.
Ward also gathered a ton of postseason awards for his outstanding year with the Hurricanes. A 1st Team All-American, Ward also took the Davey O'Brien and Manning Awards as the nation's top quarterback along with ACC Player of the Year honors.
