Chargers Encouraged to Make Blockbuster TE Trade

The Los Angeles Chargers made tremendous strides in numerous areas last year, but they arguably took a step back in the passing game.

Star quarterback Justin Herbert had a historic beginning to his career, recording over 30 touchdowns in his first two years, and over 4, 000 yards in his first three seasons.

Over his last two seasons however, his numbers have taken a dramatic dip.

There’s no way around it, 2023 year was just a bad year for Herbert, but this past season’s lack of production can be attributed to an extreme lack of talent at the wide receiver and tight end positions.

The underwhelming receiver play has received more national attention, but people close to the team know they desperately need a tight end as well.

There have been multiple tight ends being sent to Los Angeles in mock drafts, but there is some growing buzz around a potential blockbuster trade instead.

Word has been circulating the NFL for about a month now about the Philadelphia Eagles shopping their star tight end Dallas Goedert.

Travis Wakeman of The Sporting News believes if a trade is on the horizon, then the Chargers should be all in

One of the main reasons he believes Los Angeles should be trying to swing a trade is because the asking price isn’t very high at all.

At the time of the initial reports, Philadelphia was ostensibly looking for a fourth-round pick, but after a month of nobody taking the bait, the asking price likely now has some wiggle room.

The Chargers’ plan for the offseason, to pass on big names and shoot for smaller, value signings, has been well-documented and highly criticized.

Although Goedert does make a pretty penny, he’s entering the last year of his contract, so there isn’t much financial risk involved in a potential trade.

The team has also bowed out of multiple trade negotiations this offseason because of pricey packages.

Wakeman proposed a hypothetical package that included a fifth and sixth-round draft pick which should be more than attainable for the Chargers.

But it’s not the end of the world if they don’t choose this route. They signed an underrated tight end in Tyler Conklin and will likely draft one if a Goedert trade doesn’t materialize.

Of course, it’s always safer to take the sure thing in the player who’s actually produced in the NFL, but the Chargers have flexible options at the position.
