The Bears have been in the market for another tight end to pair with Cole Kmet, who they locked up with a four-year, $50 million extension 2 years ago. Last year, they tried Gerald Everett, a byproduct of Shane Waldron and his system. Neither Everett nor Waldron will be around this season, leaving the door open for another player.
Many draft experts have the Bears selecting Tyler Warren out of Penn State at the #10 pick in this year's draft. However, one writer believes a veteran could be in play. Shanna McCarriston at CBS Sports believes the Bears are one of several teams that make sense for veteran tight end Mark Andrews from the Baltimore Ravens. McCarriston goes on to write:
As McCarriston mentioned, Johnson utilizes the tight end position, as evidenced by his success with Sam LaPorta. In the past, Johnson has relied heavily on 12 personnel packages, using them about 32.2% of the time, making them a top-12 team in that area in 2023. This approach has led to success in both the running game and play-action passing.
The Bears also signed Durham Smythe this offseason, who will likely be utilized more in a blocking role.
