Wide receiver might not have been the most pressing need for the Chicago Bears entering the draft, but they made a surprise in round two when they selected Luther Burden III out of Missouri.

Following the Bears’ draft on Friday night, general manager Ryan Poles said they selected Burden because of his value on the draft board.

“It was clear he was the most talented player on the board,” Poles said of Burden. “We think he’s an electric player, playmakers, highly competitive and the run after the catch is special, probably best in this class. When you add that to the group that we have, things get pretty exciting.”

The Bears were expected to add to the trenches early, and they did so after trading back with the Buffalo Bills, giving Chicago two more second-round picks and a fourth-round pick in exchange for their No. 41 pick, No. 72 pick, and No. 240 pick.

The Bears took Boston College offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo at No. 56 and Texas A&M defensive tackle Shemar Turner at No. 62.

Per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears made history Friday night, as this is the first time the team has ever had three picks in the second round.

“Hard to find a lot of “firsts” for a team that has drafted for as long as the Bears but tonight is the first time the team has had three picks in Round 2,” Biggs posted on X. “Barring an unexpected move, this is the fifth time since 2017 the club will not make a 3rd round pick.”

The Bears are hoping they picked gems with Turner and Burden.

Both players entered 2024 with the expectation that they’d be picked in the first round. However, Burden’s production dropped amid Missouri’s struggles on offense, and Turner’s play declined while he battled a stress fracture in his shin.
