The Chicago Bears have made a decisive move towards fortifying their special teams by re-signing running back Travis Homer on a one-year, $2 million contract, as confirmed by ESPN's Adam Schefter. Homer's return to the Bears' lineup not only adds depth to their running back room, alongside D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson, but also significantly bolsters their special teams ahead of the 2025 season.

Homer, 26, has become a linchpin in the Bears' special teams strategy over the past seasons. After a four-year tenure with the Seattle Seahawks, which began when they drafted him in the sixth round in 2019, Homer joined the Bears in 2023 on a two-year deal. Over his time with the team, he has showcased his versatility and commitment, pulling double duty both as a backup running back and a pivotal special teams player.
In the 2024 season, despite grappling with finger and hamstring injuries that led to missed games, Homer made his presence felt by contributing six tackles in 10 games on special teams. Over his last two seasons with the Bears, Homer saw action in 26 games, accumulating nine touches for 34 yards on offense, while being a stalwart on special teams with eight tackles. A testament to his dedication and hard work, Homer has taken part in 81 offensive snaps and a remarkable 419 on special teams snaps during his time in Chicago.
Reflecting on the significance of Homer's extension, special teams coordinator Richard Hightower has previously emphasized the value of consistency and familiarity among the squad. Homer’s re-signing follows the retention of cornerback Josh Blackwell and the extension of linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga earlier this month, underscoring the Bears' commitment to a robust special teams unit for the upcoming season.
