Chicago Bears: Team Needs In 2024 NFL Draft
Daniel Bartel-USA TODAY Sports

Here is a list of the Chicago Bears’ needs in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Now that the 2023 season is over for the Chicago Bears, General Manager Ryan Poles’s turn is to continue the rebuild. He did an excellent job last offseason of adding talent. The result was a seven-win season, up from just three wins in 2022.

Now Poles has to keep it going to make the Bears into an over .500 team. In his introductory press conference, he expressed that he wanted to build the team mainly through the draft. He has been true to his word. In his two seasons with the team, at least ten of his draft picks are either starters or play a significant role for the team.

Poles has the opportunity to add even more this year. He once again has the #1 pick in the draft. In addition to that, he has another first-round pick at #9. He can wheel and deal to acquire more picks, or keep them and still get high-quality picks.

The Bears still have plenty of holes to fill. Let’s take a look at what the Bears’ needs are in this draft.

Edge Rusher

The addition of Montez Sweat was incredible for the Chicago Bears. He energized the pass rush and the entire defense looked different because of it. Sweat became the first player in NFL history to lead two teams in sacks in the same season.

While Sweat did a great job of getting the defense to play better, his teammates at defensive end still had some trouble getting to the quarterback. Yes, the QB hit percentage went up. However, the sacks from the other defensive ends were not there.

DeMarcus Walker, who signed a three-year, $21 million free agent deal last offseason. What that got them was 3.5 sacks in 2023. Out of those, two of them came after Sweat arrived and after Yannick Ngkaoue broke his ankle, ending his season prematurely.

Sweat needs to have help on the other side. He needs someone who can take some pressure off of him. Opposing teams will start to double-team him and make his life more difficult if he doesn’t have that help.

Tight End

No, the Chicago Bears will not part ways with Cole Kmet. He signed a new deal last offseason and had another impressive season.

However, the Bears hired Shane Waldron to be their new offensive coordinator. He likes to use multiple tight-end sets. That means the Bears need a tight end to go with Kmet.

Poles could re-sign Robert Tonyan. He is a good receiving tight end. However, they still need another player. Marcedes Lewis is sure to retire, or if he doesn’t, the team won’t re-sign him.

That means Poles and the Bears have to pick up a tight end in the draft. That would give the Bears a strong trio of tight ends who could strengthen the offense. The prospect can play in a reserve role and the next season he could play alongside Kmet as the main tight-end targets.

Free Safety

The Bears hit the jackpot with Eddie Jackson. He was the team’s fourth-round pick in 2017. He became one of the top safeties in the league and was an All-Pro. Things have not gone as well in the last few seasons.

After recording 15 turnovers in his first three seasons, Jackson went two seasons recording just one. Then, in 2022, he became a ball hawk again. He recorded four interceptions. However, his season was cut short after 12 games. In 2023, he once again played in just 12 games, this time recording one turnover.

It seems that the time has come for the Chicago Bears and Jackson to part ways. He represents a big chunk of the salary cap. If the Bears let him go, they can save anywhere from $12.560 million (with a pre-June 1st designation) to $14.150 million (post-June 1st).

That money can go a long way to helping fill other holes. The Bears would then have to find a good free safety in the draft who can replace Jackson.

Interior Offensive Line

The Bears need to improve the offensive line. Poles has added to the line, but more additions are necessary.

The interior of the line, center and left guard, need shoring up. Teven Jenkins is a very good player when he is playing. “When he is playing” is the key term. He spends too much time on the sideline or on injured reserve.

In his three seasons, Jenkins missed 20 games due to injury. There were others in which he left early or had to spend a lot of time on the sideline while he recovered. That doesn’t help him or the Bears in any way.

This season Jenkins boasted about a brand new conditioning program aimed to improve his health. Well, he started the season on injured reserve. Additionally, late in the season, he missed another game.

There is also the situation at center. Cody Whitehair and Lucas Patrick both struggled when they played the position. Whitehair is another player with a large contract. The Bears could save $9.15-$10.250 million should they let him go.

Patrick is a free agent and it appears that the Bears will not re-sign him.

Wide Receiver

There is a huge question at quarterback. Do the Chicago Bears keep Justin Fields or trade him and use the #1 pick on Caleb Williams? I did not put quarterback on this list because we already know that it will be one or the other.

Whoever Poles decides to go with, the quarterback needs weapons to target. The wide receivers unit struggled aside from D.J. Moore. Darnell Mooney, who was one of Fields’ favorite targets when he was a rookie quarterback, has had two bad seasons. He had his 2022 season cut short by an injury and had just 493 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns, both career lows.

In 2023, Mooney played more games but only had 414 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. Additionally, his catch percentage was an awful 500.8 percent. He is another one who becomes a free agent.

If Poles does trade the top pick, he must find a wide receiver early. The fan favorite is Marvin Harrison Jr. However, there are other good options such as Rome Odunze and Brian Thomas Jr. Whoever is under center will have an easier time having Moore and one of these prospects to target.

49ers continue offseason purge by trading away leading 2024 rusher

In terms of the names and faces, the San Francisco 49ers are going to be mostly unrecognizable next season. Their offseason purge continued on Saturday night when they traded running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings. Mason also agreed to a new two-year contract that will pay him $7 million. In exchange for Mason, the 49ers are receiving a sixth-round pick, while also swapping picks with the Vikings (No. 160 for No. 187). It continues an offseason that has mostly seen the 49ers subtract from their roster. Along with Mason, the 49ers have also parted ways with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, guard Aaron Banks, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, edge-rusher Leonard Floyd, defensive tackle Maliek Collins, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Talanoa Hufanga. Now you can add Mason to that list. That is a lot of talent going out the door with not much else coming back the other way. Part of it is due to the 49ers coming off a down year that saw them miss the playoffs, and part of it is contract and salary cap related as the 49ers prepare to pay quarterback Brock Purdy a significant raise on his next contract. After being a role player and backup during his first two years in the league, Mason got a chance to shine in 2024 due to injuries at the running back position. He ended up rushing for 789 yards on 153 carries and three touchdowns. For his career, he has averaged 5.3 yards per carry. From a Vikings perspective, Mason should provide solid depth and give the Vikings a great 1-2 punch at running back along with Aaron Jones.

Martin St-Louis Sends Strong Message on Joshua Roy's Attitude: 'We're Not Going to Hold His Hand'

Earlier today, Montreal Canadiens head coach Martin St-Louis made a very interesting statement about his young forward Joshua Roy. This was also the subject of an interesting article from TVA Sports and the Journal de Montréal.. 'We are not going to hold his hand,' said Martin St-Louis about Joshua Roy. Basically, St-Louis seems to be saying that Roy will need to become more independent if he wants to become a regular player for the Canadiens one day.. Wow! 'Joshua Roy has every reason to develop independence if he wants to secure a spot with the Canadiens in the medium or long term.' - Via JdeM That's the conclusion drawn from the Montreal head coach's comments about Joshua Roy. Joshua Roy must adopt a true professional attitude if he wants to succeed in the NHL St-Louis clearly mentioned that he does not want to hold Joshua Roy's hand at all times, which speaks volumes. Despite this, head coach MSL seems to have a lot of faith in his young Quebec forward and his talent. 'Roy must not expect us to guide him like parents would with their newborn.' Personally, I don't see this statement as negative, but rather as a sign that Martin St-Louis is now focused on winning games rather than watching over his young players, as he might have done more in a pure development year like last season. It shows that the focus in Montreal is shifting away from development and more toward achieving tangible results. And what do you think, will Joshua Roy become a regular in the Canadiens' top 9 one day?

Giants predicted to land quarterback not named Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson

The New York Giants have been heavily in the NFL rumor mill when it comes to the quarterback position. Both Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson have been connected a lot to the Giants. While both players would offer New York a major upgrade from what it was working with in 2024, there is a chance that the Giants might not end up with either of them. Rodgers is seemingly waiting on the Minnesota Vikings to make an offer. Wilson has met with the Cleveland Browns, and it seems likely that the Pittsburgh Steelers would have interest in trying to re-sign him if they can't land Rodgers. While the Browns have also recently received a massive QB prediction, a new prediction has been made that would see New York add a quarterback not named Rodgers or Wilson. If the Giants don't get either veteran quarterback, who could they turn to? Another free agent or the NFL Draft? James Foster of The 33rd Team has made a new prediction for New York. He has the Giants simply taking Colorado Buffaloes star quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL draft. "If the Giants didn’t have such a desperate need at quarterback, I could envision Sanders falling. But Joe Schoen needs to save his job and won’t make it to the next offseason if he doesn’t find an answer at the most important position," Foster wrote. "Sanders is a surgical pocket passer with pinpoint accuracy, but his poor pocket presence and middling physical traits could limit his upside." Sanders is coming off of a 2024 season with Colorado where he threw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also scored four touchdowns on the ground. Being the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders has helped his name gain notoriety, but Sanders has played well throughout his college career. Landing in New York is growing as a very possible scenario.

Browns insider predicts trade with Giants, stunning QB move

The Cleveland Browns possess the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They are likely hoping that Miami's Cam Ward, the "consensus" No. 1 quarterback in this year's class, remains available after the Tennessee Titans make their selection with the first overall pick. However, Browns insider Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland/The Land on Demand and NFL reporter Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com believe the Titans will take Ward with the draft's top pick. Thus, Grossi predicted in his latest mock draft that the Browns will trade their No. 2 selection to the New York Giants for pick No. 3 and choice No. 65 this year, along with a 2026 third-round pick. Grossi thinks this could result in the Giants taking Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 2 and the Browns landing Ole Miss signal-caller Jaxson Dart with the third pick. Following the NFL Scouting Combine, some speculated that the Browns could select Sanders with the second pick and that the Giants would "reach" for Dart at No. 3. Sanders has been linked with the Giants since at least December. Still, numerous reports revealed that some teams don't view him as a first-round prospect after he allegedly "hit the wrong notes in combine interviews." Perhaps there's reason to believe the Browns are one of those clubs. The Giants and Browns continued to be mentioned as potential landing spots for veteran quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins, even though the Atlanta Falcons just made a huge decision on Cousins. For what it's worth, Grossi isn't the only writer who is predicting the Giants end up with a quarterback not named Rodgers or Wilson. Grossi wrote that "signing either Cousins or Wilson might be the clearest signal yet of the Browns taking a position player other than quarterback with their first pick," and ESPN's Field Yates thinks Cleveland could draft Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter over both Sanders and Dart. Interestingly, Dart's supposed rise in draft stock has coincided with Sanders sliding down the board in mock drafts. It's difficult to know what to believe during the draft process's "smokescreen season," but it's worth noting that NFL insider Connor Hughes of SNY shared on March 5 that at least "one team source" had Dart ranked ahead of Sanders following the combine. It remains to be seen if the Browns or Giants would be bold enough to select Dart over Sanders with the second pick in the draft.
