Chiefs Biggest Remaining Free Agency Need Revealed

The Kansas City Chiefs' offseason could be described as a little indifferent with the franchise losing some solid players and also bringing in others.

The biggest losses loom at Joe Thuney, Derrick Nnadi, Tershawn Wharton, and Justin Reid, while additions-wise, Jaylon Moore comes in as the starter at left tackle, Elijah Moore gives the running back room some juice, while others include Robert Tunyan, Jerry Tillery, Gardner Minshew, Kristian Fulton, and Bailey Zappe.

Given where the Chiefs lost players over the past week, their needs for some are rather clear, and as we know, they can't all be filled in the draft.

For CBS Sports, one need stands above all else.

"Kansas City had solid play to pair with Chris Jones for years and that group rarely turned over, but now Khalen Saunders, Derrick Nnadi and Tershawn Wharton have been extracted over the past few years," CBS Sports writes. "The leftovers are uninspiring and it is time for the franchise to build that room back up in a deep draft for the position. Running back would be another consideration if the Chiefs had not shown a willingness to invest little in the position since Clyde Edwards-Helaire did not pan out."

Wharton was the Chiefs' second-leading sack-getter last season (6.5), behind only George Karlaftis, so now Kansas City has to fill his vacant position whether that is either in free agency or the draft - Chris Jones needs help, and yes he has Karlaftis but the Chiefs need more firepower on the interior.

Then there's the running back position.

Isiah Pacheco, Kareem Hunt, and Mitchell are a solid trio to enter the season with, providing all can stay healthy.

Hunt was the starter last year, while Pacheco was coming back from injury and played a bit-part role, and Mitchell missed the entire 2024 season with injury. Is there room for another?

Granted, with the stacked running back class, the Chiefs might opt to take one just to give the room some competition.

Still, getting defensive tackle help now looms as a priority for the Chiefs with their depth set to be tested if no one is brought in, and that isn't a great place to be for a team contending for a Super Bowl.
