Chiefs Draft Patrick Mahomes Protection in First Round

The Kansas City Chiefs are coming off of a Super Bowl loss, so they are rearing to go this season, and the 2025 NFL Draft is the beginning of that.

The reigning AFC champions initially had the 31st pick in the first round, but then traded it to the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that beat them in the Super Bowl, for the 32nd pick and the 164th pick.

With that 32nd pick, the Chiefs selected Ohio State tackle Josh Simmons, who was considered one of the best offensive lineman in the draft class.

Tackle has been the position on the line where the Chiefs have the biggest question mark, as starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor gets a concerning amount of penalties called on him every game.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard was sacked 14 times in 2024, which is solid considering a scrambling field general like Jalen Milroe got sacked 23 times. If Simmons can bring that protection to the NFL, it could be game-changing for the Chiefs.

He did tear his patellar tendon this past season after six games, which caused him to miss the rest of the year. But that does not seem to bother the Chiefs, as their pick was in pretty quickly, meaning they knew they wanted Simmons.

The team is hoping they can bounce back from a loss in the Super Bowl this past season, and giving superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes more protection is a great way to do that.
