The Kansas City Chiefs' offense looked explosive on paper last offseason after signing Marquise Brown to go with draftee Xavier Worthy.
However, Brown was injured in the preseason, which ruled him out until late in the year, and then Rashee Rice, after a handful of games, was ruled out for the year with a knee injury.
Two key players weren't available, so Worthy and Travis Kelce were left to shoulder the load, which they did. But now, the group is returning for another crack in 2025.
Rice is on the comeback trail, Brown is set to feature from the start of the offseason program, and Juju Smith-Schuster is also returning, so the entire group minus DeAndre Hopkins is back for 2025.
And Patrick Mahomes is bullish about what the group can become.
"Obviously, everything looks great right now, getting guys healthy as far as Rashee [Rice], having Hollywood [Brown] fully healthy, Xavier [Worthy] in Year 2, I think the offense has a chance to be really good," Mahomes said. "Excited to have these guys again, we've had a lot of turnover with the receiver room, it seems like the core group will be back. The goal is to try to build on it and get even better and get back to some of the explosive passing plays we've done in years past."
Running it back makes sense, especially when we factor in Rice and Brown, who were absent for big chunks of the season and never played together.
Rice was developing into Mahomes' No. 1 receiver, and Brown was signed to bring a speed element to the unit. Having both, along with the expected progression of Worthy to add with Smith-Schuster's veteran presence, the Chiefs do have some nice pieces.
But again, the best ability is availability and that is the one thing the Chiefs didn't have last season, and despite going 15-2 in the regular season and making it to the Super Bowl, in an ideal world, Kansas City would get a more favorable run with the football gods in 2025.
Mahomes is excited to see what this group can become, and frankly, so are we.
