The Indianapolis Colts (2-3) learned on Wednesday that they will be without wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. for "multiple weeks" due to a back injury, but reinforcements are coming.
All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor, who missed the Colts' Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars due to an ankle injury, revealed his recovery is going very well.
"I'm feeling way better, which is a positive sign," Taylor said, via Kent Sterling of 98.7 WGCL. "Anytime you can progress throughout the week, you're closer to getting back on the field."
While Taylor is feeling better, it's still up for debate when he'll make his return to the field. The 25-year-old has dealt with injuries the past couple of seasons and knows rushing back could only make things worse.
"When you're out there and you don't have anything on, you kinda feel naked, almost," Taylor added. "You start itching to get out there, but you know it's a process and you'll probably do more harm than good if you were out there."
Still, Taylor is an important piece to Indianapolis' offense. Last week, running backs Trey Sermon and Tyler Goodson only rushed for a combined 64 yards.
So the sooner Taylor can get back, the better, as the Colts are preparing for yet another divisional battle in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans (1-3).
Taylor didn't rule out the possibility of playing, noting that mental reps can be just as valuable as practice reps.
"I always felt as professionals, practice is very vital," Taylor explained. "But there's a part of it, being a professional, is being able to have those mental reps and knowing I may not have gotten a rep, but I got the coaching."
Indianapolis is still searching for its first AFC South win. That's why this week feels like a must-win game.
If the Colts fall to 2-4 and 0-3 in the division, it will be a very difficult hole to climb out of. So it's safe to say if Taylor can play, he will.
"We gotta be road warriors," Taylor concluded. "Division games are tough no matter where you're playing at, but on the road, hostile environment, it's going to take all of us."
Taylor has rushed for 349 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns this season. He also has six catches for 77 yards.
