How to get the most out of Deebo Samuel if you are the Washington Commanders?
Reach back into his best days ... and try to replicate them.
The Commanders are continuing their climb up the NFC totem pole in part by adding talented players.
General manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn will continue to add pieces in the upcoming NFL Draft. They hope to add to an already talented roster that played in last year's NFL Championship Game.
One of the bigger NFL moves this offseason was the Commanders' trade for former San Francisco 49ers star wideout Deebo Samuel.
Now, the team has added some help for Samuel to return to the prominent role he once played in San Francisco.
But this helper won't wear a uniform. not in the form of a player.
Washington has announced it is hiring former NFL wideout and Dolphins receivers coach Wes Welker. Welker also served as the 49ers' wideouts coach from 2019-2021, when Samuel was still with the team.
According to the Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala, Welker "will be a personnel analyst and work with both the personnel staff and coaching staff.''
So he's not the receivers coach here; he's more free to roam and help where it's needed.
And ... according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows, Welker was once upon a time in charge of monitoring Samuel's weight fluctuations in San Francisco, which became a major topic during his time there.
Welker - who also has a connection to the Commanders, having played alongside offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech - is obviously a Deebo guy.
As a player, Welker found huge success with the New England Patriots, especially in their Super Bowl-winning year of 2011 when caught 122 balls for 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns.
His next task? Help Deebo find huge success in DC.
