Commanders Sign Terry McLaurin Backup To New Contract

The Washington Commanders’ biggest focus this offseason will be acquiring high-level talents to push them into a tier of true Super Bowl contenders. They traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and receiver Deebo Samuel and signed Jonathan Jones, among other defensive contributors.

However, moving picks and enduring cap casualties makes the bottom roster depth all the more important. Droves of cheap, young talent aren’t coming, which means the Commanders must hit on their low-priority free agents.

Washington continued their offseason by acquiring backup running back Jeremy McNichols, tight end John Bates, and defensive end Deatrich Wise.

On Thursday, the Commanders re-signed Terry McLaurin’s backup, receiver Noah Brown.

According to Adam Schefter, Washington signed Brown to a one-year, $4.5 million deal.

Brown’s shining moment with the Commanders was his miracle Hail Mary grab against the Chicago Bears, epitomizing the magic Daniels brought to Washington and forever embedding himself in the lore of the franchise. Make no mistake, Brown is much more than a one-play wonder.

In his first year with the Commanders, Brown logged 56 targets, 35 catches, 453 yards, and one touchdown in 11 games. The year prior, with the Houston Texans, was considered his best, catching 33 passes for 567 yards and two scores (in 10 games) to help C.J. Stroud establish himself as a rising star.

Washington fans might also remember Brown from his time with the Dallas Cowboys, where he began his career.

Brown, ultimately, is the prototypical No. 4 receiver. At 6-2, 215 pounds, he’s big enough to fill in as an X receiver, but he’s received plenty of run in the slot, too. He’s strong in contest catch situations and has special teams experience. Perhaps most importantly, he’s an excellent blocker on the boundary, making him an asset for the ground game – it’s what got him on the field in the first place.

Brown also saw the fourth-most snaps at receiver for Washington in 2024. More of the same, regardless of who gets added in the coming weeks, wouldn’t be much of a surprise.

For less than $5 million, this is as strong of a depth signing as one will find in the early goings of free agency. He’s cheap, familiar with the offense, and a better player than he’s given credit for, giving the Commanders another win as the offseason progresses.
