The Washington Commanders will enter the offseason knowing exactly where their roster weak spots are, and one is at receiver.
Terry McLaurin was a one-man band in 2024, being Jayden Daniels' only consistent receiving target, with Olamide Zaccheaus the next best with 509 receiving yards. Yes, there was Zach Ertz, but he's an older tight end, and Daniels needs someone who can really dictate the defense.
But who? Tee Higgins has been mentioned as a possible option, and Washington has the cap space to go into a bidding war with any team, but what about a cheaper option?
ESPN has thrown up Los Angeles Rams receiver Cooper Kupp as a potential option for the NFC East franchise.
"The Commanders already have a great outside receiver in Terry McLaurin. Now they need an inside presence from the slot, and Kupp would be a strong fit," ESPN writes. "There's no question that Kupp had a subpar season in 2024, and he hasn't played more than 12 games in each of the past three years due to injuries. A trade for Kupp would be a gamble that he can return to his earlier form. But if it hits, it would be a huge gain for the Commanders. No defense could double-team both McLaurin and Kupp, giving quarterback Jayden Daniels more open targets in all parts of the field."
Since his triple crown win in 2021, Kupp has been on a downhill trajectory, dealing with injuries and poor form.
He hasn't surpassed 812 receiving yards and six touchdowns in any of his last three seasons, so Washington might be able to get him at a discount price. Plus, Kupp might be intrigued by what head coach Dan Quinn is building in the Nation's capital.
It is an interesting option, and Kupp could work as Daniels' ultimate security blanket. Yes, his production has declined over the last few years, but he still commands the respect of the defense.
Kupp the Commander? We don't see why not.
