The New England Patriots sent Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a late-round NFL Draft pick. The move came after weeks of rumors that teams were interested in Milton, with the Cowboys continuing to be the biggest name on the list.
Now, Milton is headed to Dallas for his second NFL season. The former sixth-round pick played just one game as a rookie, but had everyone impressed as the Patriots mounted a win over the Buffalo Bills to close out the season.
In Dallas, Milton won't be viewed as a starter in Day 1. Dak Prescott has been with the team and has remained their star quarterback for years. But each season, the trade rumors seem to be growing larger, and possibly more realistic. And with other contracts to be paid and a $74 million cap hit in 2026, maybe things are hitting a peak.
The Cowboys may be looking to move on from Prescott after the season, giving the veteran quarterback to a team with a need for a playoff-caliber passer. There will be teams interested, as there always is in quarterbacks - Milton being a prime example. Meaning, Dallas will have options, if they present the opportunity.
And as their next starter, Milton feels like a prime candidate. Entering just year two in the NFL, Milton brings a ton of athleticism and a rocket arm.
Teams wanted Milton as a young developmental piece. Some must have viewed him as a player with more upside than a backup, and the Cowboys were clearly one of those teams.
"Trading for Joe Milton is the PERFECT kind of way to address your backup quarterback situation," Cowboys analyst RJ Ochoa described the trade. "Well done on the Cowboys. Given that Milton still has 3 years of team control with his contract... THIS is exactly why this trade is brilliant (in terms of context) and the Trey Lance one wasn't. Serious kudos to the Cowboys."
Maybe things could work out in the former Patriots quarterback's favor. And maybe, the trade opens the door for another, and an opportunity for Milton to become a starter.

The Las Vegas Raiders struggled mightily last season, largely due to a lack of talent at the quarterback position. New general manager John Spytek remedied that this offseason by trading for two-time Pro Bowler Geno Smith. Aidan O'Connell, who started 17 games for the franchise over the last two seasons, is still under contract for the next two years. On Friday, however, The Athletic's Vic Tafur reported that O'Connell could be used as a trade chip on NFL Draft weekend. "Bringing in a young quarterback to learn behind Smith makes sense (and we think the Raiders might trade Aidan O’Connell on draft weekend)," wrote Tafur. There is a slew of young quarterbacks in this year's draft class who the Raiders have met with, including Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, Will Howard, Jalen Milroe and Quinn Ewers. Any of those players would be a more suitable replacement for Smith and provide a potential long-term option at the position. O'Connell had flashes during his rookie season, but he regressed in year two and ultimately showed that he is not a franchise quarterback. If the team could net a late-round pick for his talents, then they should jump at the opportunity to do so and opt for a young signal-caller in the draft instead.

Yankees Will Make a Surprising Roster Move After Starter Finished Rehab Strong
After throwing four scoreless innings Thursday night at Double-A Somerset, Clarke Schmidt is expected to rejoin the New York Yankees rotation next week. He allowed three hits, struck out four, and looked sharp, throwing 61 pitches, 45 for strikes. It was exactly what the Yankees needed to see. But now comes the tricky part: making room. According to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, rookie right-hander Will Warren is the likely odd man out. Warren has shown flashes but still has minor-league options, making him the easy move. Carlos Carrasco, who’s been less effective but more experienced, would have the right to refuse a demotion, and he likely would. Right now, the Yankees appear to be choosing stability. The decision isn’t just about performance. The Yankees need to hold onto any arm they can right now. They have already lost Gerrit Cole for the season to Tommy John surgery. They are also without Luis Gil, who is dealing with a strained lat, for at least a few more months. Warren may be the more intriguing long-term piece, but keeping Carrasco buys them time. As Kuty notes, this could all shift again once Gil returns from his lat strain. Gil was “ahead of schedule,” according to updates last week. It’s unlikely he would be ready by late April or early before May. Until then, the Yankees are trying to patch together a rotation until GM Brian Cashman can get some help. Schmidt’s return gives them another dependable arm. In the bigger picture, the Yankees also closely watch their pitchers in the upper level of the minor leagues. Cam Schlittler, a rising arm at Double-A, could be in play later this summer.
Athletics' Luis Severino reveals interesting tidbit about negotiations with Mets
Most MLB players will never admit it publicly, but money is a significant factor in choosing a team during free agency. That's why Athletics right-hander Luis Severino saying the quiet part out loud is so believable. Severino spoke to The New York Post's Mike Puma before a three-game series between the New York Mets and Athletics in Sacramento. "Sevy" essentially divulged that he took more money to head out West because the Mets "had other plans." The 31-year-old starter spent last season in Queens, where he pitched to a solid 3.91 ERA over 31 starts, his most in a single season since 2018 after a bevy of injuries over his New York Yankees tenure. Therefore, it's understandable that Severino was looking to cash in as a free agent this past offseason. He reportedly received a similar offer to the one the Mets wound up giving to veteran righty Frankie Montas (two years, $34 million), which was obviously short of the $40 million total Severino was "willing to accept." Montas, of course, is currently rehabbing from a lat injury as health continues to elude the 32-year-old. That's likely why he was willing to accept that offer (in addition to his subpar 4.84 ERA in 30 starts combined between the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers), while Severino proved his health and talent in 2024. It's rare for a player to admit publicly that talks between them and a team came down to money, but in Severino's case, the $7 million difference amounted to him settling in Sacramento for the next three seasons at an average annual value of roughly $22 million per season. Time will tell if that contract proves to be a wise investment for the Athletics, but so far in 2025, Severino has a mediocre 4.74 ERA over his first three starts while having to start half his games in a hitter-friendly venue.

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without two regular defensemen and unable to recall a replacement when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday. That means the Leafs will be forced to face the Habs with just five blueliners due to their tight salary cap situation. Oliver Ekman-Larsson was ruled out on Friday and listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, Jake McCabe, already sidelined for the last three games, remains unavailable but is expected to return before the end of the regular season. McCabe (23 points in 66 games) leads the Leafs in average ice time this season, while Ekman-Larsson has posted 29 points in 77 games for Toronto. “Maybe I’ll suit up and play back there, I wasn’t sure about it,” Craig Berube said about the situation. Outside of joking, the Leafs' head coach added that the team would need support from its forwards to help manage the short-handed blue line. “It’s important that our forwards do a good job of helping our (defense) out tomorrow night and making sure that they get back quick for breakouts and things like that,” Berube said. “Make the game easy on them as much as possible.” While the NHL rules do allow for an emergency recall, that exception is only granted after the team plays a game with a shortened roster. Toronto, down to just $195,000 in cap space, cannot afford to call up another player for the minimum salary, but the Leafs will be able to use the NHL's exception to bring up a defenseman from their affiliate in the AHL for Sunday’s game in Carolina. Judging by Friday's practice lines, shared by TSN's Mark Masters, Simon Benoit is expected to pair with Chris Tanev against Montreal as the top-two defensemen available. The Leafs (48-26-4 and 100 points) have already clinched a playoff berth but remain in a tight race within the Atlantic, having one game in hand on the Tampa Bay Lightning (98 points) and the Florida Panthers (96).
