It's the middle of NFL free agency, but teams are also making trades as well.
The Dallas Cowboys have been relatively quiet so far in free agency, while the Buffalo Bills have been more active, particularly on defense. This afternoon, they are reportedly close to combining on a trade involving cornerback Kaiir Elam.
NFL insider Josina Anderson first reported the news that a trade was imminent. Meanwhile, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero has details on the compensation.
"Full trade: The #Bills will receive fifth- and future seventh-round picks from the #Cowboys for Kaiir Elam and a sixth-rounder, per source," Pelissero tweeted.
Elam was the No. 23 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Florida. As a rookie, Elam appeared in 13 regular season games with six starts, finishing with 41 tackles, two interceptions and four passes defensed.
Injuries limited Elam to only three regular season appearances in 2023, though he did return to intercept a pass in a playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This past season, Elam played in 13 games and made four starts. He logged 26 tackles, two passes defensed and one fumble recovery.
So far, the Cowboys have re-signed several key players in free agency, including defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa and wide receiver/kick returner KaVontae Turpin.
Externally, they've brought in offensive guard Robert Jones and running back Javonte Williams on one-year deals, along with two other former first-round picks defensive linemen Solomon Thomas and Payton Turner. Thomas' deal is for two years, while Turner's is only for one.
Buffalo, meanwhile, has retained safety Damar Hamlin and brought in wide receiver Josh Palmer, along with help on the defensive line in Joey Bosa, Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht and secondary depth in safety Darrick Forrest.
