The quarterback is usually the team leader. His voice carries in the huddle and in the locker room. In Dallas, that is the case as quarterback Dak Prescott has emerged as the central voice of the Cowboys.
This offseason, Dallas lost some key veterans in Jourdan Lewis and DeMarcus Lawrence. It is now time for younger players to step up and take the "next-man-up'' mentality when it comes to leadership.
"I almost don't want to say one because I want to challenge them," Prescott said Friday when asked who he wanted to see step up. "There's a lot of slates at a lot of positions. Obviously, Micah Parsons, you've got CeeDee Lamb, you've got guys that you can name, but there's a lot of the guys that have an opportunity to step up."
Parsons remains the only one working on an extension this offseason as Prescott and Lamb locked theirs up last offseason. But Dak has offered advice here to Micah, and why not?
Who knows better how to pry monster contracts out of Jerry Jones than his QB?
The Parsons negotiations have been ongoing ... with our Mike Fisher reporting on positive movement there toward what might be a record $200 million deal.
Meanwhile, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is asking Parsons to do more and be the defensive leader the Cowboys need him to be.
And indeed ...
The All-Pro seems to be doing the right things of late.
"In every aspect of Micah, he's got great potential to do more," Jones said at the NFL's league meetings. "Every aspect, whether it be in my mind physically or from the standpoint of physically, he has a lot of potential and he is so capable mentally that he could make us all follow him a little bit."
Jones continued to elaborate what he is expecting from Parsons before the contract talks get more serious in nature. Jones likes what he sees from Parsons and believes he embodies what he is looking for.
Said Jerry: "I think he's that kind of individual and that kind of person. But I will tell you that those are the kinds of things that I want to personally have total and complete satisfaction that I've got a commitment from him, and that I can see that it's not just contract talk."
Prescott knows Parsons is that kind of player as well.
"Very confident in (Micah) and what he can do," Prescott said. "Who he is and what he wants to is as important as anything. And that's in being a leader."
