Cowboys' Dak Announces Goodbye To Failed QB
Jason Parkhurst-USA TODAY Sports

Former third overall pick Trey Lance has not had the career that many thought he would have so far, but he is now heading to a new team hoping for a fresh start.

He spent two years with the Dallas Cowboys after being traded to them in August of 2023. He sat behind Dak Prescott in that time, and the two formed a friendship in those two seasons. The star QB took to Instagram to congratulate his former backup on signing with the Los Angeles Chargers.

“Yesssir! LFG @treylance09," Prescott said on his IG story.

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Lance with the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft because of his play at North Dakota State, where he had a total of 42 touchdowns in his second season.

While Justin Herbert may have the starting job locked up in Los Angeles, that does not mean that Lance will not have an important spot on the roster. The current QB2 on the Chargers depth chart is Taylor Heinicke, and Lance will be looking to surpass him and become the full-time backup.

As for the Cowboys, they traded a a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for Joe Milton III and a seventh-rounder. The former Tennessee star wowed fans last year with his arm talent and scrambling ability, and he will use that skill to back up Prescott in the 2025 season.

While Lance's time in Dallas might not have been all he hoped it would be - a failure to many - Dak’s goodbye and wishes him nothing but the best in the next step of his young career.
