Cowboys’ Dak Prescott Advises Shedeur as QB Finally Drafted

FRISCO - Finally, it’s over.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott came away as one of the winners from Round 1 of the NFL Draft. His team did not early on add another weapon for him but they did identify some additional protection up front with the pick of Tyler Booker.

The Cowboys' unexpected decision certainly made waves on the first night of the draft but was far from the biggest story. In fact, the headline of the night stemmed from a prospect who did not have his name called.

All 32 teams passed on quarterback Shedeur Sanders either through trade or skipping on him when their team was on the clock. This comes as a surprise especially since two quarterbacks went off the board in Round 1 with Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart hearing their name called.

Ward was the presumed No. 1 overall pick, but Sanders was expected to be the next quarterback taken. What started as a night of jubilation in Canton, Texas, turned into one of melancholy.

And then it happened for every round… First round second round third round fourth round… With the Cleveland Browns finally drafting the son of Deion Sanders on Saturday afternoon in the fifth round.

Finally. Mercifully.

The draft may have not gone according to Sanders' plan but he has since gotten some encouragement from a veteran quarterback who has been in his shoes. Cowboys' play caller Dak Prescott spoke to Clarence Hill of DLLS Sports, offering some words of encouragement for him.

"I don't think it's fair in the sense of how much people are looking for him being drafted... it doesn't matter when you get in. I know he expected himself to go No. 1 overall and he would be wrong if the didn't.

"Every pick after that is fuel to the fire... this is only going to push him.''

Prescott was not the same high profile prospect coming out of Mississippi State. But he saw seven quarterbacks get the call before him in the 2016 draft. That only pushed him to emerge as the Cowboys' starter in his rookie season, enjoying a career now that has seen him become the league's highest paid player for a time.

So while the overreaction pours in on Sanders after a noted disappointment, that does not mean his cause is lost.

Sanders did get drafted ... and thus ends this round of the drama around his NFL candidacy.
