Cowboys Drop Bombshell On 2 Trades Via Jerry Jones

The Dallas Cowboys had just finished their annual pre-NFL Draft press conference here inside The Star on Tuesday afternoon when the principals, led by owner Jerry Jones, headed toward an elevator-door escape.

But with just hours before Thursday and the launching of the NFL Draft, Jones stopped and paused and shared a tidbit of information with a handful of reporters.

The revelation?

"We’re looking at two things that could happen before or after the draft," Jones told us. "Two pretty substantive trades. We've been working on 'em today."

Really? Wow.

A cautionary note or three ...

One, Jerry talking this way about his Cowboys always requires a grain of salt as he simply cannot resist the temptation to at least create the impression he's about to "make a splash.''

Two, Jerry's idea of "substantive'' might differ from yours.

Three, it would in a sense be disappointing if an NFL front office wasn't making the phone calls needed to make "pretty substantial trades" ... or any sort of deal at all.

A smart guess? While our Courtland Sutton story is for instance smart and sexy but only

our projection of what is doable (see below) ...

Dallas sitting at No. 12 in the first round and taking calls to move down from there is quite likely. The Cowboys are as you know on the record as thinking they would lean toward a trade back (because the talent available around 12 might be similar to the talent 10 or more picks later). At the same time, should this and every front office be calling Cleveland and New York about moving into the top 3 picks should somebody suddenly decide they don't like Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter? Absolutely.

But what, in the end, will make it "substantive''? That beauty could be in the eye of beholder Jerry.
