Cowboys Eyeing 'Saquon 2.0' in NFL Draft
Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

We have in the past taken the position that running backs are too replaceable to use first-round capital on.''

And the NFL has for the last few years agreed with that idea.

Has anything changed? And if so, who changed it?

Answers: Maybe. And Saquon Barkley.

And that takes us to the Dallas Cowboys - as vulnerable as any team to the "Copycat League Syndrome'' ... and Ashton Jeanty.

In our judgment, the Boise State prospect might line up nicely in this NFL Draft with Dallas picking at No. 12. ... because Jeanty might just be far from "replaceable.''

The running back position as a whole has been devalued; that mindset is still in place. But what if the player is just that special?

Just look at what Barkley did for the Eagles. Or how big an impact Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs had for their respective offenses in Baltimore and Green Bay. Those guys are "erasers'' in the sense that they are good enough to eliminate problems elsewhere on the offense.

We think Ashton Jeanty is an eraser.

Guys like Saquon (and prime-time Ezekiel Elliott) are talents with the ability to make everything else look good even when everything else is bad.

They have the ability to hammer away in short yardage, and also to make one guy miss and house one from 60 yards.

The trick on the "valuation of the running back'' isn't that they're worthless - it's that their worth must be properly evaluated.

How many backs are there worth Saquon's $13 million per year deal? That's a very, very short list.

But drafting Jeanty in the No. 12 slot? That's going to end up being a four-year, $20 million deal - just $5 million annually for a premium talent - an "eraser.''

The Dallas coaching staff has been re-made into one with a run-first mindset; the four most important and highest ranking coaches on the offensive side all have a "masters degree'' in running the football, including the Cowboys new offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who has Boise State ties.

So upon re-evaluation? Pick No. 12 isn't too high. And $5 million per year isn't too much. Not when the Cowboys are essentially in search of Saquon 2.0.

49ers continue offseason purge by trading away leading 2024 rusher

In terms of the names and faces, the San Francisco 49ers are going to be mostly unrecognizable next season. Their offseason purge continued on Saturday night when they traded running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings. Mason also agreed to a new two-year contract that will pay him $7 million. In exchange for Mason, the 49ers are receiving a sixth-round pick, while also swapping picks with the Vikings (No. 160 for No. 187). It continues an offseason that has mostly seen the 49ers subtract from their roster. Along with Mason, the 49ers have also parted ways with wide receiver Deebo Samuel, guard Aaron Banks, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, edge-rusher Leonard Floyd, defensive tackle Maliek Collins, linebacker Dre Greenlaw, cornerback Charvarius Ward and safety Talanoa Hufanga. Now you can add Mason to that list. That is a lot of talent going out the door with not much else coming back the other way. Part of it is due to the 49ers coming off a down year that saw them miss the playoffs, and part of it is contract and salary cap related as the 49ers prepare to pay quarterback Brock Purdy a significant raise on his next contract. After being a role player and backup during his first two years in the league, Mason got a chance to shine in 2024 due to injuries at the running back position. He ended up rushing for 789 yards on 153 carries and three touchdowns. For his career, he has averaged 5.3 yards per carry. From a Vikings perspective, Mason should provide solid depth and give the Vikings a great 1-2 punch at running back along with Aaron Jones.

Life-Changing News Strikes Vancouver Canucks Prospect Cole McWard

Vancouver Canucks defensive prospect Cole McWard recently had some life-changing news announced on social media. It's been nearly two years since Cole McWard made his NHL debut with the Vancouver Canucks in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks and since then, the blueliner has spent the majority of his time developing in the American Hockey League. With a little over a month to go in the AHL regular season before the Calder Cup Playoffs begin, Cole McWard has decided now is the time to announce some life-changing news. Vancouver Canucks prospect Cole McWard announces engagement In a post on social media on Friday afternoon, the Abbotsford Canucks shared that Cole McWard is his now fiancé, Giuliana, are engaged. 'More Wedding Bells Congratulations to Cole McWard and his fiancé, Giuliana, on their engagement!' the Abbotsford Canucks said. The couple took to Instagram to share the news as well, with McWard's fiancé posting the following: 'The most pure love there ever was - here's to being each other's greatest gifts in life forever. To the McWard's,' Giuliana said in a joint Instagram post. McWard, 23, is putting together a nice season down in the American Hockey League with Abbotsford, registering 22 points (five goals, 17 assists), 12 penalty minutes and was a plus-five. Due to the acquisitions of Victor Mancini and Marcus Pettersson a month before the National Hockey League's trade deadline, along with the play of rookie defenseman Elias Pettersson, there unfortunately hasn't been any room on the Canucks' roster for McWard this season. The Fenton, Missouri native is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st and is arbitration eligible, so it's going to be interesting to see what his next contract with the Vancouver Canucks looks like. From everyone here at Canucks Daily, we'd like to congratulate Cole McWard and his fiancé Giuliana on their engagement.

Colorado Avalanche Captain Gabriel Landeskog Drops a Major Statement On Retirement

Gabriel Landeskog has been out since the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup, but now, he's got a message for those thinking he's headed to retirement. The Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup back in the summer of 2022, and since that point, they're yet to see captain Gabriel Landeskog take the ice again, with many believing that he could be headed towards retirement. There has been hints that he could be returning at some point in 2024/25, but thus far we've not had any significant updates, with all signs hinting that he'll miss his second straight full NHL season. However, for those that believe he's headed towards retirement, No. 92 has a message that he firmly delivered on episode 2 of 'A Clean Sheet: Gabe Landeskog', hinting that he's not done yet. Those people that are worried about retirement, they might have to re-think things a little bit. At 32-years of age, there's still plenty of time for Landeskog to get back on the ice in the NHL, but with his growing list of injuries continuing to mount, it's easy to see why fans don't expect to see him back anytime soon. Way back in May of 2023, Landeskog underwent cartilage transplant surgery, the same one that Chicago Bulls star Lonzo Ball underwent, and while it took him a few years to get close to 100%, he has finally got through his recovery and made his way back to the court. This doesn't mean that Landeskog will be returning anytime soon, but with the team pushing for a Stanley Cup in 2025, if there's anytime for their long-time captain to make his long awaited return, that could be the most dramatic and positive time for him to do so. Ultimately though, it may not be until next year, but at the very least, this comment shows that he's committed to a return.

Critical Update On Evgeni Malkin's Future in Pittsburgh After Latest Penguins Insider Comments

Evegni Malkin's career is winding down, and now, a top Penguins insider has revealed when the veteran star may be officially departing the NHL and the Penguins. Over the past two decades, there have been very few players in the NHL as consistent as Evgeni Malkin, and while he's not the biggest star on this Pittsburgh Penguins team, he's certainly been an absolute stud for the franchise and for the city. Earlier this season, Malkin tallied his 1,200th game played in the NHL, and with all of them coming as a Penguin, it's safe to say that he'll one day have his jersey retired and will likely be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever play in the NHL. At almost 39-years of age, his career is slowly coming to an end, and now, Penguins reporter Josh Yohe has predicted that at the end of the 2025/26 season, Malkin will call it quits with Pittsburgh. "I bet he'll retire after next season. He knows he's not the same player he once was, and I don't think he's interested in declining too much further. He's got a lot of money. He's got a first-ballot Hall of Fame plaque locked up. I'm not sure what else there is to play for in his case. But - and this is a big but - if he has a good 2025-26 season, maybe he'll have the itch to stick around. Maybe. I doubt it. But only he knows that." Throughout his time with the Penguins, Malkin has tallied 511 goals and 1,339 total points, all while playing a key role in three Stanley Cup wins, putting him on the Mount Rushmore of Pittsburgh Penguins legends. Ultimately though, as Yohe notes, Malkin doesn't want to be seen as a shell of himself at the NHL level, and unless he finds significant improvement in his game next year, it's more likely than not that he'll head home, whether that's to play in the KHL or to cruise off into retirement. Regardless, there will likely never be another Penguin to wear No. 71 with plenty of post-career accolades on the way for one of the games modern day greats.
