Sure, the Dallas Cowboys haven't made an NFC championship game in almost 30 years. Is Jerry Jones everyone's favorite general manager? No. These are facts you can't ignore in talking about the management of "America's Team".
Despite that earlier success now way out of sight in the rearview, much of the personnel that lead Dallas to that stage is still running things in the front office.
Apparently to NFL Spin Zone, that doesn't matter.
In their latest NFL power rankings, the Cowboys were slotted at 25 - the eighth worst team in football.
Yes, the same team that won 12 games in three of the last four seasons, but happened to sputter in 2024 because of a ton of major injuries.
The ranking doesn't do much to justify the position either. Here is what Lou Scataglia put about the Cowboys' ranking - in its entirety:
"I have no clue what the Dallas Cowboys are trying to do yet again. They should remain among the bottom-10 teams in the NFL throughout the 2025 NFL Season."
If this argument were to be brought up during the 2024 offseason, it would make a little more sense.
The Cowboys are entering a new era under head coach Brian Schottenheimer, and although that will bring its challenges, there hasn't been much "bad" to decipher from his work so far.
Free agency wise, Dallas had a far better showing than last offseason. They've re-signed multiple key contributors, and brought in starting-caliber replacements for those who signed elsewhere. There has been a clear emphasis on attacking the most glaring position holes, and Dallas has done so fairly well.
With as much as Schottenheimer as preached about the team's mission, on and off the field, it is hard for us to look at the Cowboys and have "no clue of what they are trying to do".
Regardless of other's assessment of their football team, anything that ranks the Cowboys in the bottom-10 of the NFL should be eye-opening to the Jones family in charge.
Jerry certainly has his shortcomings, but this ranking feels solely based on roster management while ignoring the collection of premier players and recent success in the regular season.
He may still be running the show like he did in the '90s, but a ranking like this may serve as a wake-up call for what direction Jones' team may be headed.
The Cowboys have stated they aren't done with this offseason. There are still a lot of moves to be made in contract talks, free agency, and the NFL Draft.
The Joneses performance in the new couple months will be crucial in them showing the rest of the league the way they are truly headed going into 2025.
Already, they're off to a rough start in the eyes of some.
Jerry has mentioned that he doesn't dwell each morning on straying further and further from the team's last championship appearance, but may soon have to recognize that people's perception of the team aren't like how they used to be.
It's up to him to change those negative perceptions.
