FRISCO - The New York Jets are saying goodbye to Aaron Rodgers and probably to his "roster friends'' like Davante Adams, too.
In the case of Adams, the veteran Pro Bowler presently carries salary numbers of $38 million for each of the next two years ... not a good combo with a 33-year old player.
So what's his next step?
A cut or trade possibility looms for Adams, and the Jets will be looking to mostly just escape from his deal.
One ESPN prediction says his money is "going to bring an end to his time with the Jets, given that the primary reason they dragged Adams to New York (Rodgers) will be hitting the road.''
And another ESPN prediction, this one from "insider'' Dan Graziano, connects him to the Dallas Cowboys.
“I like him for the Dallas Cowboys along with CeeDee Lamb,'' Graziano recently said on Get Up. “They definitely need a No. 2 wide receiver. He’s more like a 1A but a little bit later on in his career. He’s at the point where he’s not gonna be able to do all the things he used to be able to do, but still, he can contribute in a lot of ways. You saw him have some big games down the stretch for the Jets.
"Give Dak Prescott another target.”
Umm, sure. But isn't Graziano skipping some steps here?
The Cowboys are coming off a disappointing 7-10 season and need more weaponry under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Lamb is a superstar with a fourth consecutive 1,000-yard campaign in 2024.
Behind him? A collection of JAGs.
Combine his time with the Las Vegas Raiders and the Jets in 2024, and Adams surpassed 1,000 receiving yards and had seven touchdowns. So he's still got value.
How much value? An ESPN guess ..
"Wide receivers in their 30s almost never generate significant deals, but a deal with one guaranteed year and $15 million or so would make sense for the six-time Pro Bowler,'' they write.
OK, now we're talking. But Adams is prepared to accept $15 million instead of $38 million? That would be nice of him.
Word is that the Northern California native wants to play on the West Coast, and our bet is that his willingness to accept less money will be tied to trying to make that happen.
So, Davante Adams in Dallas at an affordable rate? It's a fun Cowboys idea - but those who are proposing it should be required to show their math work.
