New Washington Commanders receiver Deebo Samuel fired back over concerns that he was overweight last season with the San Francisco 49ers.
Samuel was traded to the Commanders for a fifth-round pick. The former All-Pro is entering the final year of a three-year, $71.5 million extension he signed with the 49ers in 2022.
Samuel's All-Pro season came in 2021, racking up 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He added 365 rushing yards and eight more touchdowns on the ground.
Since signing the extension, Samuel's production has taken a dip. He has not surpassed 1,000 yards receiving and has been less effective as a ball carrier. Samuel had just 670 yards receiving last season.
Matt Barrows of The Athletic indicated that Samuel's weight issues were part of the problem. It stemmed from him not being able to practice due to various ailments.
"A big issue was Samuel’s weight. He had pneumonia in Week 7, and an array of injuries — calf, ribs, oblique and wrist — throughout the year kept him out of practices," Barrows said. "And when Samuel didn’t practice, he gained weight. A lot of weight. Let’s just say he crossed that 220-pound threshold with gusto and at one point tipped the scales at what you might want your starting tight end to be."
Samuel responded to the report, citing the exact number.
"225 to be exact," Samuel said. "Can’t wait till this season start. Fresh start new Bo."
Samuel will have a chance to get back on track with the Commanders. Washington is fresh off an NFC Championship appearance, thanks mainly to Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels.
