The Houston Texans weren't satisfied with another trip to the divisional round. On Friday, head coach DeMeco Ryans parted ways with not one but two coaches from his staff.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Texans have fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. This is a bit of a surprise considering Slowik was a popular coaching candidate last hiring cycle. Clearly, his stock took a hit this season since Houston finished 19th in scoring offense.
Slowik isn't the only coach being shown the door in Houston this Friday. Offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out, per NFL Network.
"A major change in Houston: The Texans are moving on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, sources say, after an up-and-down offensive season," Rapoport said. "Despite reaching the divisional round, coach DeMeco Ryans hopes for more. OL coach Chris Strausser is also out."
Ryans was asked about Slowik following the Texans' playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. He said the right things, but you could tell that he was frustrated.
"I think overall with Bobby, I saw some growth," Ryans said. "I saw some improvement throughout the year. Overall, offensively, we have to improve. It wasn’t where we wanted to be. There were challenges throughout the year, that is every year. You have challenges, you have ups and downs where you try to figure out the course, who we have and how to make it work. We have to improve."
The Texans should have no trouble filling their vacancy at offensive coordinator. Plenty of coaches would love to run an offense with C.J. Stroud under center.
As for Slowik, he'll have to try build up his stock elsewhere. Prior to joining Houston's staff, he spent several years with the San Francisco 49ers.
Who knows? Maybe Slowik will return to the Bay Area.
