Does QB Aaron Rodgers make sense for Raiders?

When news broke recently of the New York Jets' intention to part with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, oddsmakers quickly came out with favorites to land the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player.

One of those teams included the Las Vegas Raiders.

DraftKings listed the Raiders (h/t USA Today) as the second favorite to land Rodgers, behind the Pittsburgh Steelers. If the Raiders sign Rodgers in free agency, he would give the team an upgrade at QB for the short term.

At QB for Las Vegas last season, neither Aidan O'Connell (1,612 yards passing and eight TD passes) nor journeyman Gardner Minshew (2,013 yards passing, nine TD passes) distinguished himself.

At 41, Rodgers still had a decent 2024 season (3,897 yards passing and 28 TD passes) for the 5-12 Jets. He missed nearly all the 2023 season after suffering an Achilles injury in the first game.

Raiders minority owner and future Hall of Famer Tom Brady also played into his 40s, putting up big numbers and winning a Super Bowl.

The Raiders are also reportedly showing interest in Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold. Other QB options include Russell Wilson, who struggled toward the end of the season and may be done with the Steelers, and Justin Fields, who began the 2024 season as Pittsburgh's starting QB. He also is a pending free agent.

The Raiders must make a splash in free agency, most likely at QB, and add a franchise QB in the draft, potentially Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shadeur Sanders. Las Vegas has the sixth pick in the first round.
