Eagles Considering Dome Stadium To Host Future Super Bowl

Home sweet ... dome?

While Lincoln Financial Field has paved the way for the Philadelphia Eagles to play in two Super Bowls in three seasons, it has its limitations. Mostly, as an outdoor stadium in a cold-weather climate, it can't attract big-name sporting events.

At this week Super Bowl LIX buildup, owner Jeffrey Lurie daydreamed about changing that problem by building a domed stadium for Philly.

Problem: The Eagles are 107-69-1 in the regular season and 11-4 in the postseason since The Linc opened in 2003.

“I love outdoor football," Lurie said. "I love the cold games. I like the hot games, like the snow games. On the other hand, Philadelphia deserves to host the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, lots of great events. It’s an incredible sports city. Does it deserve it? Yes. So we have to balance all those things.”

Open-air MetLife Stadium in New Jersey hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014, so Philly isn't necessarily an impossibility for future hosting. But a Final Four, etc. would obviously require a dome.

The Eagles’ current lease runs through 2032, so nothing is imminent. Which should be just fine with Philly fans.

The Eagles have won two NFC Championship Games in blowouts at The Linc: 31-7 over the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 and 55-23 over the Washington Commanders two weeks ago.

They will battle the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs Sunday inside the climate-controlled comfort of the Superdome in New Orleans.
