Eagles GM Howie Roseman addresses Jihaad Campbell injury concerns

How does a player widely considered to be the best at his position fall to the second-to-last pick of the first round of the NFL Draft? In the case of Philadelphia’s Jihaad Campbell, he was injured.

Coming into the draft, Pro Football Focus had Campbell ranked as the best linebacker available and 13th-best prospect overall with “the ideal build and athletic ability to play any linebacker spot.”

In 2024, the 6-foot-3, 244-pound prospect played 637 snaps from the box and 112 on the line while registering 119 tackles (11.5 for loss) with five sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and an interception.

But somewhere along the way, he suffered a torn labrum. Despite being able to compete at the NFL Scouting Combine, he was unavailable for Alabama’s pro day after having surgery to repair the injury.

On April 17, while talking to Kay Adams of the "Up & Adams" show, Campbell gave a simple, two-word response to a question about he's feeling: "I'm Gucci."

The injury was no problem for Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, who gave Kansas City an extra fifth-round pick to move up one spot (No. 31) to get Campbell.

"We do not have any long-term concerns with his health.” Roseman told reporters. “We look at the draft as a long-term opportunity for our team. We have a lot of confidence this guy's going to be here and play at a really high level for a long time. When you're in a draft and you're picking at the end of the first round, you don't have an opportunity to get a top-10 player on your board. A guy who can affect the quarterback, a guy who can affect the passing game. For us, it was a no-brainer."

That’s bold considering starting linebacker Nakobe Dean suffered a torn patellar tendon in last year’s NFC Wild-Card game and could miss significant time in 2025. Campbell, on the other hand, should be ready for the start of training camp, where he’ll look to get plenty of work in Dean’s absence.
