Last season, former New York Jets coach Pete Carroll was surprisingly fired by the Seattle Seahawks after a historic run of success for the team.
It was Carroll's third stint as a head coach in the NFL after a stop with the Jets and Patriots, and a stop at USC in between.
Now, Carroll reportedly wants another shot an an NFL job at the age of 73. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Carroll wants a comeback.
Per the report, Carroll is specifically interested in the Chicago Bears' opening.
That might not be the best fit considering the Bears hope to hire an offensive mind that can groom Caleb Williams into the quarterback they think he can be. Carroll's specialty is defense.
But that doesn't mean Carroll can't be a better fit somewhere else. There are plenty of jobs that are open and that are expected to be open this offseason.
Jobs in Las Vegas, New York (both franchises), Dallas, New England, Chicago, and New Orleans, among others could be a pathway for Carroll to re-enter the NFL coaching ranks.
Our own Nick Faria wrote, "At the time he was hired 30 years ago, Carroll was just 43 years old. He's had plenty of success and experience since that time winning both a National Championship and Super Bowl during his career. The NFL has changed drastically since the early 90s. What Carroll struggled with back then is not necessarily a concern anymore. He has always commanded the respect of his locker room and his youthful enthusiasm is something that separates him from other coaches at or near his age.
"There are a lot of factors that go into who the Jets are going to be looking to hire as their next head coach but is surely can't hurt to get the old ball coach in for an interview."
The question is, with the current trend being to hire young offensive-minded head coaching candidates, is there a team that would take a flyer on a proven but "more experienced" defensive mind next season?
We'll see.
