Former Chargers Coach Brandon Staley Could Land New Job

The Los Angeles Chargers moved on from head coach Brandon Staley in the middle of the 2023 season, parting ways with him after two full seasons and a 5-9 start to his third.

Staley spent the 2024 season on Kyle Shanahan's staff in San Francisco with the 49ers, but it appears that he could be in line for a new position after Sunday's Super Bowl.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Staley could join Kellen Moore in New Orleans if the latter takes the head coaching job with the Saints after the Super Bowl.

Moore - currently the offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles - is the favorite to land the Saints job, and Fowler believes he could bring Staley along with him.

"The NFL world anticipates Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore landing the Saints' head-coaching job, and his prospective staff is starting to come into focus," Fowler said in a report for ESPN.com.

"Two names I've heard as possibilities at defensive coordinator are 49ers assistant coach Brandon Staley and Buccaneers outside linebackers coach George Edwards. Both have history with Moore -- Staley hired Moore as his offensive coordinator with the Chargers in 2023, and Moore overlapped with Edwards in Dallas."

Staley brought Moore in after a successful run with the Cowboys, hiring him to the same role that he had with the Cowboys.

Moore spent one year in Los Angeles before heading to Philadelphia and making his way to a Super Bowl, but it appears that Staley left enough of a positive impression on him to consider teaming up again.

Staley has worked for several NFL teams during his career, starting with the Chicago Bears in 2017. He would spend two years in Chicago as an outside linebackers coach before taking the same role with the Denver Broncos in 2019.

After spending the 2020 season as the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Rams, he remained in the same building by taking the head coaching job with the Chargers.

If Moore is indeed in line to become the Saints' new head coach, he could build a staff with several years of NFL experience. Staley would certainly fit that criteria, and it seems that he has the inside track with Kellen Moore.
