The New England Patriots have had some unfortunate luck with their kickers over the past few seasons. The Patriots will now have to have another new kicker for the third straight season after the news broke this morning that their kicker from last season Joey Slye has signed a deal with the Tennessee Titans.
This is not a major loss, as he went 26-33 on kicks last year, good for a 78.8% make rate that ranked 27th lowest in the entire league.
The only kicker on the roster as of now is John Parker Romo, who played four games for the Vikings last year in his first NFL season. In those games, Romo was 11-12 on field goals with a 91.7% make rate and he went 7-8 on extra points. Romo made his one attempt at a 50+ yard kick nailing a 55-yarder against the Cardinals.
Romo could be set to become the Patriots next kicker but they will likely bring in at least one more kicker to create some competition.
If they decide to go the free agency route, there are a few good kickers that they could sign. A reunion with 40-year-old kicker Nick Folk could be in order, who had a really solid four seasons with the Patriots from 2019-2022. Even at his old age, Folk was able to go 21-22 on field goals for the Titans last year including making all six of his 50+ yard attempts, and he also made all 25 of his extra point attempts in 14 games.
A few other names in free agency include Matt Prater, Eddy Pineiro, and Austin Seibert. All solid kickers that could at least compete for a spot as the starter next year.
In terms of the draft, there are a few prospects that they could consider including prospect Caden Davis of Ole Miss. He started his career with Texas A&M but then transferred and played his last two seasons at Ole Miss. Last season he went 24-29 on field goals including a career-high when he hit a 57-yarder against LSU, and going 57-59 on extra points as well.
A few other kicking prospects they could consider would be Andres Borregales from Miami or Ryan Fitzgerald from Florida State. The Patriots have nine draft picks this year and now with Slye signing elsewhere, it would not be a surprise if they used one of them on a kicker.
There are a lot of routes the Patriots can go to find a kicker and hopefully, they can finally find one that will play multiple seasons with the Patriots. A kicker can be a game changer in close games and defensive battles so it will be exciting to see who goes out and kicks the first field goal of the Patriots season.
