The Los Angeles Rams recently decided to release a defensive back, and another team has already claimed him off waivers.

Tre Tomlinson, a TCU product, was drafted by the Rams in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The franchise cut him on Wednesday after he had spent two years with the team.

On Friday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Rams' NFC West rival, the San Francisco 49ers, had claimed Tomlinson off waivers.

The Rams and 49ers had two different seasons in 2024. The Rams clinched the NFC West for their 15th division title in franchise history, while the 49ers missed the playoffs at 6-11.

"49ers claimed CB Tre Tomlinson off waivers from the Los Angeles Rams," Schefter said.

Tomlinson played in 15 games for the Rams as a rookie in 2023, accounting for 13 total tackles.

However, the 2024 season did not go according to plan for him. He suffered an undisclosed injury that ended his season and was on injured reserve for the whole year.

According to Spotrac, Tomlinson's deal with the 49ers is for two years. He will be paid $960K in 2025 and $1.14 million in 2026. The former Rams defensive back will be an unrestricted free agent in 2027.

The 49ers decided to part ways with wide receiver Deebo Samuel this offseason, as he was traded to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round pick.

Outside of that, the team has had a relatively quiet offseason. The team re-signed offensive guard Ben Bartch to a one-year deal.

The Rams are keeping quarterback Matthew Stafford around for another season on a restructured contract. Stafford had two more seasons left on his contract before the extension.

Other key extensions include offensive tackle Alaric Jackson's three-year $57 million deal and receiver Tutu Atwell's one-year $10 million extension.
